Gap (French pronunciation: ​[ɡap], Occitan: [ˈɡap]) is the prefecture of the Hautes-Alpes department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in Southeastern France. In 2019, the commune had a population of 40,631, making it the most populated city in Hautes-Alpes. At a height of 750 metres above sea level, to the south of the Écrins Massif, it is also France's highest prefecture.

Le cœur urbain est situé à une altitude de plus de 700 mètres mais on trouve sur son territoire des sommets de près de 2 000 mètres (montagne de Charance, pic de Gleize) ou les dépassant (Raz de Bec à 2 385 m). La ville bénéficie d'un climat méditerranéen sous influence montagnarde caractérisé par un ensoleillement important et des hivers froids. Gap était historiquement rattachée au Dauphiné. Peu concernée par la Révolution industrielle du XIXe siècle malgré l'arrivée du train en 1875, la commune est restée relativement rurale jusque dans les années 1950. Elle connait alors un boom démographique qui résulte de son rôle de pôle commercial et de services du département. La croissance de sa population se poursuit à un rythme plus modéré au début des années 2020. Relativement isolée sur le plan géographique, Gap a développé une économie d'autosubsistance reposant sur les secteurs public et tertiaire. (fr)
