- Landing Craft Assault (LCA) was a landing craft used extensively in World War II. Its primary purpose was to ferry troops from transport ships to attack enemy-held shores. The craft derived from a prototype designed by John I. Thornycroft Ltd. of Woolston, Hampshire, UK. During the war it was manufactured throughout the United Kingdom in places as various as small boatyards and furniture manufacturers. Typically constructed of hardwood planking and selectively clad with armour plate, this shallow-draft, barge-like boat with a crew of four could ferry an infantry platoon of 31 and five additional specialist troops, to shore at 7 knots (13 km/h). Men generally entered the boat by walking over a gangplank from the boat deck of a troop transport as the LCA hung from its davits. When loaded, the LCA was lowered into the water. Soldiers exited by the boat's bow ramp. The LCA was the most common British and Commonwealth landing craft of World War II. Prior to July 1942, these craft were referred to as "Assault Landing Craft" (ALC), but "Landing Craft; Assault" (LCA) was used thereafter to conform with the joint US-UK nomenclature system. The Landing Craft Assault's design's sturdy hull, load capacity, low silhouette, shallow draft, little bow wave, and silenced engines were all assets that benefited the occupants. The extent of its light armour, proof against rifle bullets and shell splinters with similar ballistic power recommended the LCA. Also, soldiers were able to sit, unlike other landing craft which required them to stand. Throughout the war in the Atlantic, the Mediterranean, and the Indian Ocean, the LCA was the most likely sea assault transport of British Commandos, United States Army Rangers, and other special forces. Plus petite péniche employée par la Royal Navy, il fut néanmoins le principal bateau utilisé par les troupes alliées d'assaut qui débarquèrent sur les plages de Normandie le 6 juin 1944. À leur départ du port, les LCA sont transportés par des Landing Ship Infantry et mis à l'eau, entièrement chargés, à l'aide de bossoirs. Le LCA pouvaient transporter jusqu'à 31 soldats et cinq hommes du génie dont la mise à terre s'effectuait par la rampe mobile qui s'abaissait à la proue du bateau. (fr)

Het Nederlandse Korps Mariniers heeft er ook een aantal in gebruik.Het is bestemd voor amfibische landingen vooral uitgevoerd door mariniers maar ook door andere eenheden. Een LCA is lichter en kleiner dan de landingsvaartuigen die bekendstaan als LCI's, LCT's, LSI's en LST's. De vaartuigen zijn over het algemeen tussen de 15 en 20 meter lang en 3 tot 4 meter breed, heeft meestal een dieselmotor en één of twee schroeven en lichte boordbewapening. (nl)
- Landing Craft Assault (LCA) – brytyjska szturmowa barka desantowa piechoty używana podczas II wojny światowej. Jej podstawowym celem było przewożenie żołnierzy ze statków transportowych na brzeg. Jednostka wywodzi się od prototypu zaprojektowanego w z Woolston w Wielkiej Brytanii. W czasie wojny była produkowana w całej Wielkiej Brytanii, w miejscach tak różnych jak małe warsztaty szkutnicze i manufaktury mebli. Poszczególne serie różniły się detalami. Zazwyczaj wykonana była z twardego drewna i obita pancerzem. Barka miała czteroosobową załogę i mogła przewozić na brzeg z prędkością 7 węzłów 31-osobowy pluton i dodatkowo jeszcze pięciu żołnierzy lub 360 kg wyposażenia. Generalnie żołnierze wchodzili po trapie z transportowca, gdy barka jeszcze wisiała na jego żurawikach. Gdy LCA była załadowana, opuszczano ją do wody. Żołnierze opuszczali barkę przez rampę z przodu. LCA była wykorzystywana przez Brytyjczyków i narody Brytyjskiej Wspólnoty Narodów do desantów podczas II wojny światowej. To także najmniejsza jednostka zapisana w rejestrze Royal Navy. Przed lipcem 1942, jednostkę nazywano "Assault Landing Craft" (ALC), a później "Landing Craft; Assault" (LCA) zgodnie z nomenklaturą amerykańsko-brytyjską. W latach 1940–44 powstało ich 2030. Zaletami barki były: wytrzymały kadłub, ładowność, niska sylwetka, małe zanurzenie i ciche silniki. Jej lekki pancerz chronił przed kulami karabinowymi i odłamkami o podobnej energii. Używana podczas wojny na Atlantyku, Morzu Śródziemnym i Oceanie Indyjskim do transportu brytyjskich komandosów, United States Army Rangers i innych jednostek sił specjalnych.
