Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom is a 1984 adventure film directed by Steven Spielberg. Released on May 23, 1984, it is the second film in the Indiana Jones franchise and a prequel to the 1981 film Raiders of the Lost Ark.

The film stars Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones, and was based on an original story by George Lucas. Many members of the previous film's production team returned, including cinematographer Douglas Slocombe, editor Michael Kahn, and composer John Williams. Additions to the main cast included actress Kate Capshaw, who played the role of Wilhelmina 'Willie' Scott (Jones's second female lead following Karen Allen as Marion Ravenwood, in Raiders of the Lost Ark), and Jonathan Ke Quan as Jones's 11-year old sidekick Short Round. It won an Academy Award for Visual Effects. Featuring themes of child slavery, and destructive cult rituals, the film is darker in tone than its predecessor. The original story was intended to be a horror movie as well as a remake with elements of Gunga Din (1938). The original title was Indiana Jones and the Temple of Death. In fact, Spielberg admitted that compared to the other films, it has "hardly any [laughs] at all". The film is also notable for being instrumental in the creation of the rating category PG-13. (en)

Segunda de las aventuras cinematográficas protagonizadas por el héroe de acción y aventuras creado por George Lucas y Spielberg, que veían como el personaje daba de si lo suficiente como para convertir sus andanzas en una nueva saga que asegurase la continuidad de los éxitos logrados con la trilogía "Star Wars" / "La guerra de las galaxias". Al igual que sucedió con la segunda entrega galáctica (conocida como Episodio V), este segundo capítulo de Indy debía ser más oscuro que la película original, y para ello el genial tándem ideó una aventura con la India como escenario y con la secta de estranguladores tuggies como archienemigos del héroe. Indiana Jones iría en esta ocasión acompañado de otra mujer, Willie Scott (una Kate Capshaw que celebró el rodaje casándose con Spielberg), que viene a ser el personaje cómico necesario en la película, y un niño oriental precoz y karateka, Tapón (Ke Huy Quan, que también protagonizó Los Goonies en el papel de "Data"). Para enfrentarse a un culto de monjes seguidores de la diosa de la muerte hindu Kali y su líder Mola Ram quien tienen una mina secreta en la cual esclavizan e influencian niños robados de aldeas a trabajar y también realizan sacrificios humanos en nombre de Kahli. El éxito de la película fue innegable, pese a que económicamente no superó la recaudación de "En busca del arca perdida" / "Los Cazadores del Arca Perdida", y lo único objetable fue la cantidad de duras críticas a causa del contenido sangriento y oscurantista de algunas escenas, especialmente aquella en la que el gurú de los tuggies, Mola-Ram (Amrish Puri), arranca el corazón a un hombre sin que la cámara se desvíe ni un centímetro del hecho. Fue a raíz del estreno de esta película que Hollywood decidió crear la calificación -13 años (PG-13). En la actualidad, pese a que Spielberg ha mostrado un cierto arrepentimiento por el contenido violento de la película, son muchos los admiradores de la saga y cinéfilos en general que la reconocen como, al menos, tan entretenida y poderosa como el filme original, e incluso yendo un paso más allá en su sentido de la aventura, que resulta maravillosamente frenética, vibrante y envolvente en cada minuto del metraje. Sin embargo, en la tercera entrega, Indiana Jones y la Última Cruzada, se retornó quizá de forma poco original a los nazis, los desiertos y las reliquias bíblicas. (es)
