- El criptojudaisme és l'adhesió al judaisme clandestí mentre es declara públicament ser d'una altra fe. A les persones que practiquen el criptojudaisme se'ls refereix com criptojueus. El terme criptojueu també s'utilitza per descriure descendents de jueus que encara generalment en secret mantenen alguns costums, sovint mentre s'adhereixen a altres religions, més comunament el cristianisme. En la seva majoria, els criptojueus mantenen els seus rituals i costums bàsiques, com:
* No menjar carn de certs animals prohibits a la Torah.
* Dessagnar abans de matar l'animal que menjaran, dessagnar la carn o assecar abans de cuinar.
* Fer pa sense utilitzar llevat.
* Els homes es fan la circumcisió i intenten circumcidar als seus fills en néixer o al bateig.
* Intenten guardar el Sàbat, és a dir, dedicar exclusivament el dissabte a Déu. (ca)
- اليهود المُتخفّون هم اليهود الذين يتظاهرون باعتناق دين آخر غير اليهودية، بسبب ظروف مختلفة، ويظلون على دينهم في الواقع. تعود هذه الممارسة بشكل أساسي في الأماكن والفترات الزمنية حيث تم اضطهاد اليهود أو تم حظر اليهودية، ما أدى إلى ظهور يهود يمارسون اليهودية في خفية. ينطبق الاسم تاريخيًّا على اليهود الإسبانيين الذين اعتنقوا الكاثوليكية بالأخص، وهم معروفون باسم الكونفيرسو، أو الأنوسيم، أو المارانوس. ترتبط الظاهرة خصوصًا بإسبانيا في عصر النهضة، بعد مذبحة عام 1391 وطرد اليهود عام 1492. ومن أهم فرق اليهود المتخفين في العالم المسيحي (المارانوس)، والذين أجبروا على التحول للمسيحية الكاثوليكية في شبه الجزيرة الإيبيرية في القرن الرابع عشر؛ ويُشار إليهم أيضاً بعدة أسماء منها المسيحيين الجدد (بالإسبانية:cristiano nuevo، بالبرتغالية:cristão-novo) والكونفرسوس (بالإسبانية: conversos) وبإسم التشويتاس (بالإسبانيّة: Chueta؛ بالكاتالانية:Xuetes) في جزيرة مايوركا. وقد أنتشر اليهود المتخفون في كافة مستعمرات الإمبراطورية الإسبانية في أمريكا اللاتينية وأندمجوا مع السكان المحليين الكاثوليك مما نتج عن جماعات كاثوليكية عبرانيّة. في القرن السابع عشر هاجر هربًا من الاضطهاد عدد من اليهود المتخفين إلى المملكة الهولندية، التي تبنت إثر استقلالها عن إسبانيا، الكالفينية كمذهب رسمي وتبنت نظامًا ليبراليًا ما جعلها بنوع خاص موئلاً لمختلف الأقليات المضطهدة خصوصًا اليهود وهناك عاد اليهود المتخفين إلى دينهم الأصلي اليهودية. ومن أهم فرق اليهود المتخفين في العالم الإسلامي يهود الدونمة (بالتركيّة: Dönme) في تركيا، وهي طائفة من اليهود من أتباع سباتاي زيفي أجبرت على التحول للدين الإسلامي في عهد السلطان محمد الرابع، فضلًا عن جماعة جديد الإسلام وهي طائفة من اليهود في إيران، أجبرت على التحول للإسلام عقب أعمال شغب ضد اليهود في مشهد وخراسان الكبرى عام 1839. فضلًا عن بعض القبائل الرحل في صحراء المغرب. La personoj kiuj praktikas kriptojudismon estas referencataj kiel kripto-judoj aŭ kriptojudoj. La termino kriptojudo estas uzata ankaŭ por priskribi posteulojn de judoj kiuj ankoraŭ –ĝenerale sekrete– retenas kelkajn judajn kutimojn, ofte dum ili estas praktikantoj de aliaj religioj, plej ofte de kristanismo. Majoritate, la kriptojudoj tenas bazajn ritojn kaj kutimojn, kiel tiuj jenaj:
* Ne manĝi viandon de proskribitaj animaloj, por ezemplo de porko.
* Manipuli kaj buĉi la manĝotan animalon (antaŭ konsumi ĝin) pere de la tradicia sistemo ŝejita

Etymologiquement, « crypto-judaïsme » est composé du grec kryptos - κρυπτός qui veut dire « caché ». Le phénomène crypto-juif est le plus souvent consécutif à l'antijudaïsme, soit de façon directe (campagnes de conversion forcée), soit de façon indirecte (conversion en vue d'échapper aux discriminations anti-juives, dont les restrictions à l'accès aux études ou aux professions ou le droit de résidence). Pour quelque raison que ce soit, les Juifs convertis sont des conversos.
