- أورييل دا كوستا أو أورييل أكوستا (بالبرتغالية:.Uriel da Costaب) - (1585/1590 - 1640) هو فيلسوف هولندي من أصل برتغالي . ولد في البرتغال وتلقى تعليمًا مسيحيا كاثوليكيًا. وفي عام 1614 فرّ إلى هولندا، وهجر المسيحية إلى اليهودية لينتهي به الأمر في وقت لاحق مشككًا بالتعاليم المسيحية واليهودية على حدّ سواء. أعلن معارضته لقطعية الديانة اليهودية، واتهم الحاخامات بتحريف عقيدة موسى. انكر خلود النفس بعد الموت، وبسبب ارائه حرم مرتين من عضوية «المجتمع اليهودي». توفي سنة 1640م منتحراً. D’ascendance marrane, il émigre à Amsterdam aux Provinces-Unies pour s’y convertir au judaïsme qu’il se figure être conforme à sa lecture littérale de la Bible. Il y découvre cependant que le judaïsme regorge de croyances issues de la tradition orale, qu’il juge également contraires à son entendement. Il passera sa vie à combattre ce qu’il considère comme l’irrationalité des doctrines juives et chrétiennes, théorisant dans ses derniers écrits une religion de la raison. Marginalisé par ces deux sociétés en raison de ces idées, il se suicide par balle. Par son histoire personnelle et par ses croyances rationalistes, il préfigure Baruch Spinoza. Il fournit par ailleurs l’inspiration pour plusieurs classiques du théâtre yiddish où il apparaît comme une figure tragique, victime de l’intolérance des milieux juifs orthodoxes. (fr)

- Uriel Acosta (ook wel Uriël da Costa; Porto, eind 1583 of begin 1584 of 1585 — Amsterdam, april 1640) was een Amsterdamse filosoof uit Portugal. Acosta werd geboren als Gabriel da Costa. Zijn familie was Joods maar had zich bekeerd tot het katholicisme in de 15e eeuw. Gabriël studeerde aan het Collegium Coimbrese (een jezuïetenuniversiteit in Coimbra) canoniek recht van 1604 tot 1608. Op zijn vijfentwintigste ontving hij de eerste priesterwijdingen. Hij werd aangesteld als schatbewaarder van de collegiale kerk San Martinho de Cedofeita voor op de geestelijke stand. Maar in 1612 trouwde hij, en een studie van het Oude Testament bracht hem tot het jodendom. Hij kreeg zijn familie zover zich ook weer tot het jodendom te bekeren. Vervolgens emigreerde de familie naar Amsterdam. Daar werd Acosta (net als Spinoza) vervolgd door de Joodse autoriteiten wegens zijn rationalistische filosofische meningen die botsten met het orthodox judaïsme. Acosta pleegde zelfmoord. De Duitse schrijver (1811–1878), schreef in 1846 een toneelstuk over Acosta's leven, eenvoudig getiteld Uriel Acosta.
