- A backstory, background story, back-story, or background is a set of events invented for a plot, presented as preceding and leading up to that plot. It is a literary device of a narrative history all chronologically earlier than the narrative of primary interest. In acting, it is the history of the character before the drama begins, and is created during the actor's preparation. It is the history of characters and other elements that underlie the situation existing at the main narrative's start. Even a purely historical work selectively reveals backstory to the audience. - Als Backstory (dt. Hintergrundgeschichte, Vorgeschichte) bezeichnet man im Filmwesen die in einem Film zu dramaturgischen Zwecken dargestellte Vergangenheit der Hauptdarsteller, die für zentrale Handlungsweisen der Protagonisten von Bedeutung sind. Dies kann beispielsweise in Form einer Rückblende (z. B. Flashback), eines Filmvorspanns in Form eines Prologs oder durch die bloße Erzählung über die Vorgeschichte erfolgen. Die Backstory Wound ist ein Sonderfall der Backstory, bei dem psychische Verletzungen einer Hauptperson in der Vorgeschichte des Films als handlungsleitendes Element dienen. Backstory Wounds werden beispielsweise verwendet, um auffälliges Verhalten der Charakter plausibel erscheinen zu lassen. - Une toile de fond est un cadre dans lequel se déroulent des événements. Elle sert à replacer un sujet par rapport à une situation générale. Elle est utilisée dans les domaines littéraires, cinématographiques et ludiques. L’expression vient du théâtre, où une toile peinte en fond de scène représente le cadre de l'action. Elle figure un paysage champêtre, urbain ou d'intérieur. Dans le cinéma primitif, tout décor était une toile de fond. « Pour capturer l’indispensable lumière solaire, les cinéastes des débuts conçoivent un dispositif plutôt sommaire et très économique, à l’image des tréteaux de forains ou des théâtres à deux sous, ils tendent une simple toile peinte dans un parc, un jardin, une cour, représentant en à-plat le lieu où doit se dérouler l’action, aussi bien les murs que les fenêtres et certains éléments de décoration comme les cheminées, voire les meubles. Bien entendu, le sol lui aussi est un simple tapis ou une autre toile peinte. » Dans le cadre des jeux de rôle, l'expression « toile de fond » est utilisée comme traduction du terme anglais background.
