The circuit has been used for Grand Prix and Formula One races and has hosted the South African Grand Prix twenty times. Among the Formula One races held at the track the 1977 South African Grand Prix stands out, as it is principally remembered for the fatal accident that claimed the lives of race marshal Frederick Jansen van Vuuren and driver Tom Pryce. In recent years, the area surrounding the circuit has developed into a residential and commercial suburb of Johannesburg. More recently, Kyalami has played host to five rounds of the Superbike World Championship from 1998 to 2002 and later in 2009 and 2010, the season finale of the Superstars Series in 2009 and 2010, and the South African round of the 2008–09 A1 Grand Prix season. - Le circuit du Kyalami est un circuit permanent de sports mécaniques situé en Afrique du Sud sur les communes de Midrand et Sandton (Gauteng), entre Johannesbourg et Pretoria. Il a été mis en service en 1962. Utilisé pour le Grand Prix automobile d'Afrique du Sud, c'est un des circuits les plus rapides du championnat du monde de Formule 1, situé sur un plateau de plus de 1 500 mètres d'altitude sa longueur était alors de 4,104 km. Il causait des problèmes de carburation aux monoplaces mais faisait la part belle aux voitures équipées d'un moteur turbocompressé. En 1986, le Grand Prix d'Afrique du Sud est retiré du calendrier du championnat du monde de Formule 1 à la suite de sanctions internationales en raison de la politique d'apartheid menée par le gouvernement sud-africain. Le circuit sera reconstruit au début des années 1990 pour cause d’urbanisme, lesportions Crowthorne Corner, Barbeque Bend et Jukskei Sweep sont alors supprimées ou fortement modifiées. Le tracé sera légèrement rallongé à 4,261 km, et deviendra plus sinueux et plus lent. En 1993, la F1 abandonne le circuit nouvellement reconstruit, après seulement deux courses en raison de la faillite du promoteur. Il accueille également les 9 Heures de Kyalami qui se sont disputées sur le circuit de 1961 à 2000. Le circuit sera aussi utilisé pour le championnat du monde de Superbike de 1998 à 2002. Le secteur entourant le circuit s'est peu à peu développé en banlieue résidentielle et commerciale de Johannesburg. En 2009, le circuit a de nouveau accueilli le championnat du monde de Superbike. Le Grand Prix d'Afrique du Sud de Superbike 2009 a été marqué par le grave accident du pilote français Régis Laconi lors des essais. En 2015, les installations et le tracé subissent une grande rénovation, pour obtenir une nouvelle homologation auprès de la FIA afin d'accueillir des compétitions internationales, le circuit mesure 4,522 km. Oryginalny tor (w użyciu przed nałożeniem sankcji politycznych w 1986) był majestatyczny. Rozegrano na nim wiele pamiętnych wyścigów. Tor został przebudowany we wczesnych latach 1990. Formuła 1 opuściła przebudowany tor po 1993. Grand Prix RPA rozgrywane było też na torze w East London. Na owym torze w 1977 roku miał miejsce wypadek z udziałem Toma Pryce'a. W czasie wyścigu kierowca Renzo Zorzi wycofał się z powodu wycieku paliwa z bolidu, co spowodowało mały, ale szkodliwy pożar. Bolid Zorziego zatrzymał się tuż za niewidocznym grzbietem wzgórza, ale dwóch porządkowych bez zgody władz zdecydowało się przejść na drugą stronę, aby ugasić ogień. W tym momencie pojawiły się pojazdy Pryce'a i Hansa-Joachima Stucka jadąc jeden obok drugiego. Bolid Stuck'a ominął obu porządkowych, jednakże Pryce nie mógł ominąć 19-letniego Jansena Van Vuurena. Wjechał w niego z pełną prędkością i rozerwał młodego porządkowego, zabijając go na miejscu. Zderzenie miało minimalny wpływ na pojazd Pryce'a – tylko lekkie uszkodzenie przedniego skrzydła. Nieszczęśliwie, gaśnica trzymana przez Van Vuurena uderzyła Pryce'a w głowę zabijając go na miejscu. Pojazd Pryce'a wyeliminował też z wyścigu Jacques’a Laffite. (pl)

- Kyalami (minha casa em zulu) é um autódromo localizado a norte de Joanesburgo na África do Sul. Inaugurado em 1961, o Grande Prêmio da África do Sul de Fórmula 1 recebeu vinte provas entre 1967 e 1993, com interrupções de 1986 a 1991. Na pista de Kyalami, no sábado, 5 de março de 1977, houve um acidente bizarro na história da Fórmula 1. O piloto italiano Renzo Zorzi, parou seu Shadow número 17 no acostamento da pista com problemas mecânicos, iniciando um pequeno princípio de incêndio. Fiscais da prova atravessaram a pista para apagarem o pequeno incêndio, a fim de evitarem maiores danos. O carro número 16 do companheiro de equipe de Zorzi, o Shadow do piloto galês Tom Pryce, atropelou um dos fiscais que atravessava a pista, despedaçando-o. Pryce foi atingindo na cabeça pelo extintor de incêndio carregado pelo então fiscal. O impacto foi tão forte que o extintor atingiu o piloto arrancando seu capacete e o matando instantaneamente. O carro de Pryce seguiu desgovernadamente até atingir um muro do autódromo violentamente. O fiscal de prova que faleceu na hora só foi reconhecido após a direção de prova convocar todos os fiscais de pista daquela corrida e ver quem estava faltando. O fiscal morto tinha apenas 19 anos. Foi na pista de Kyalami que Nelson Piquet tornou-se bicampeão em 1983 na Fórmula 1. Em 1984, Ayrton Senna marcou o primeiro ponto na categoria com o 6º lugar na prova. Por causa de problemas de segurança na pista e ao boicote da maioria das equipes (incluindo McLaren, Ferrari e Williams) devido a política de segregação racial do Aparthaid, provocaram o cancelamento da prova de 1986 à 1991. E para piorar, a especulação imobiliária que a região de Joanesburgo sofria, foi o estopim para a expansão da pista em 1988. Depois da libertação de Nelson Mandela em 1990, a África do Sul tentava se esforçar para receber a categoria em 1992 e 1993. No entanto, a falta de retorno financeiro provocou a saída do circuito do calendário da Fórmula 1. Desde então a Fórmula 1 nunca mais realizou corridas no continente africano e o autódromo perdeu sua relevância até no cenário regional. Também recebeu provas da A1 Grand Prix até 2009. Posteriormente, a WTCC passou a usar o autódromo. (pt)
