Bland de övriga tätorterna på ön märks Homeroupolis, Kardamila, Kampochora, Mastichochoria, Amanis, Psara, Inousses, Ionia och Agiou Mina. Chios var en tidlig ionisk koloni. Under de stora grekiska koloniseringarna i Medelhavsområdet upprättade även Chios en koloni, Maronea, vid Egeiska havets nordkust. Ön blev senare ockuperad av perserna och gick därför vid självständigheten med i deliska förbundet . Den blev sedermera romersk och senare en del av det bysantinska riket. Efter att korsfararna år 1204 erövrat Konstantinopel blev Chios en del av det latinska kejsardömet. Därefter blev det en genuesisk besittning för att senare erövras av Osmanska riket. År 1822 gjorde befolkningen uppror mot osmanerna men upproret slogs ned med våld i en massaker som kostade en fjärdedel av öns då 30 000 invånare livet. Händelsen var av stor betydelse för den västeuropeiska synen på det osmanska styret i Grekland. Chios blev en del av det självständiga Grekland efter första balkankriget år 1912. (sv)
