British rock describes a wide variety of forms of music made in the United Kingdom. These include attempts to recreate American rock 'n' roll in the mid-1950s, and, more commonly, music derived from the blues-rock that emerged from the 1960s. Since around 1964, with the British Invasion spearheaded by the Beatles, British rock has had a considerable impact on the development of American music and subsequently rock music across the world.

The term "rock" is often used in combination with other terms to describe a variety of hybrids or sub-genres, and is often contrasted with pop music, with which it shares many structures and instrumentation. Rock music has tended to be more orientated to the albums market, putting an emphasis on innovation, virtuosity, performance and song writing by the performers. Although much too diverse to be a genre in itself, British rock has produced many of the most significant groups and performers in rock music internationally, and has initiated or significantly developed many of the most influential sub-genres, including progressive rock, punk, heavy metal music, new romanticism, and indie rock.

  • À la fin des années 1950, le rock'n'roll, après avoir conquis les États-Unis, commence à gagner le Royaume-Uni, donnant naissance à ce qu'on appelle le rock anglais, même si le terme est impropre puisqu'on rassemble communément sous ce vocable l'ensemble du rock britannique. Des chanteurs comme Cliff Richard, Tommy Steele, Billy Fury, Marty Wilde ou Adam Faith, et des groupes aussi, comme The Shadows ou Dire Straits imposent un style très proche de celui défendu par leurs idoles américaines, non sans talent souvent. Un phénomène musical est né, qui ne tarde pas à connaître un succès de plus en plus large. Des concerts sont organisés à Londres, puis dans les coins les plus reculés du Royaume-Uni. La radio contribue à populariser ces jeunes vedettes, puis la télévision (Ready Steady Go !). Des journaux prennent le relais, comme Record Mirror, Melody Maker, New Musical Express... Des festivals sont mis sur pied, notamment les fameux festivals de l'île de Wight, mais aussi Glastonbury et le précurseur, le National Jazz & Blues Festival, à partir de 1961. Les jeunes britanniques approfondissent leur culture musicale, du côté du blues, notamment, mais aussi du jazz et du folk. Au milieu des années 1960, le Royaume-Uni voit naître une multitude de groupes de rock : The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, The Animals, The Dave Clark Five... Très vite, ces groupes s'affranchissent de leurs influences d'origine pour créer leur style propre. C'est le Swingin' London. Les groupes britanniques s'imposent bientôt comme d'authentiques créateurs. Poussés par leur succès croissant au Royaume-Uni, ces groupes partent alors à l'assaut de l'Europe, puis des États-Unis mêmes, pourtant terre d'origine de cette musique, et s'y implantent sans coup férir, créant un véritable choc culturel, qui eut un retentissement mondial. C'est ce qu'on a appelé la British invasion. Depuis, le rock britannique a été constamment à la pointe de la novation, disputant les palmes de l'originalité et de la qualité au grand frère américain.
