The label ceased operations in 1999, although it was revived at one point in 2011 for the release of the compilation album Upside Down. Over the course of its sixteen-year history, Creation predominantly focused on alternative rock, releasing several influential indie rock, shoegazing, and Britpop records, but also featured bands performing various other styles of rock, including indie pop and post-punk, as well as some electronic, folk, and experimental artists. Il primo disco pubblicato dall'etichetta, grazie ad un prestito bancario di 1.000 sterline, fu '73 in '83, singolo della band The Legend! uscito nel 1983. Da li in poi la Creation diventerà una delle etichette chiave del movimento indie pop inglese della metà degli anni 1980, grazie anche ai primi artisti messi sotto contratto come The Jesus and Mary Chain e Primal Scream.
