- Se denomina rock gótico al conjunto de estilos musicales que tienen en común el gusto por lo oscuro y dramático. Existen múltiples estilos que suelen ser denominados indistintamente rock gótico. En ese sentido podemos afirmar que hay una concepción amplia y una concepción concreta del término. En un sentido amplio, abarca todas las corrientes musicales que evolucionaron desde el post punk de finales de la década de los 70, incluyendo gran variedad de tipo de sonidos, desde el Punk a la electrónica pasando por la música ambiental y la dark wave. En un sentido estricto, rock gótico se refiere sólo a los sonidos más cercanos al rock quedando fuera de la definición la música de corte electrónico, industrial y pop. (es)

- Il gothic rock (detto anche goth rock o dark rock) è un genere musicale compreso nella corrente New Wave, sviluppatosi in Inghilterra a cavallo della fine degli anni settanta quale diretta evoluzione del Post-punk. Raggiunse l'apice durante la prima metà degli anni ottanta del XX secolo ed è considerato come la forma più oscura e più tenebrosa del rock underground. Nella fase iniziale, i testi erano solitamente introspettivi e profondamente personali, ma successivamente vennero introdotte sensibilità poetiche che portarono il genere ad un gusto per il romanticismo letterario, la morbosit�, la simbologia religiosa e l'epico. Tra i "padri" del goth rock britannico troviamo i Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bauhaus o Joy Division, esponenti del Post-punk, che ispirarono il fondamento iniziale sul Goth rock. Nel caso dei The Cure e i Siouxsie and the Banshees, è da segnalare come, dopo un inziale periodo "punk" o più precisamente post-punk, abbiano, in seguito, sviluppato una personalissima e "seminale" intepretazione del Goth Rock.
