- Cocteau Twins est un groupe pop écossais, tendance new wave. Ce groupe écossais apparu au début des années 1980 a durablement marqué la musique pop britannique, avec ce mélange de mélancolie, de féerie et de légèreté. On a d'ailleurs parlé, à son propos, de dreampop, terme assez vague qui désigne toute une frange du rock indépendant des années 1980 surtout (mais aussi les années 1990), chanté par des femmes à la voix éthérée : c'est donc en toute logique qu'Elizabeth Fraser, chanteuse des Cocteau Twins, est considérée comme un modèle du genre. Sa voix très facilement identifiable, impression qu'accentuent les « paroles inventées » des chansons de Cocteau Twins. La critique rock anglaise a surnommé Liz Fraser « The Voice of God ». Durant les années 1980, les Cocteau Twins ont constitué l'un des fers de lance du label indépendant anglais 4AD, l'un des plus influents de l'époque. Entre 1982 et 1996, le groupe a sorti une dizaine d'albums, inégaux, surtout vers la fin, ainsi qu'une quinzaine de EP, contenant la plupart du temps des morceaux inédits sur albums. Outre Garlands et Head Over Heels, Treasure, véritable manifeste du groupe, à la fois pop et gothique, suivi de Victorialand et The Moon and the Melodies . On peut citer aussi Blue Bell Knoll et Heaven or Las Vegas, plus accessibles, sans doute, que leurs prédécesseurs. Après Heaven or Las Vegas, les Cocteau Twins quittent le label 4AD pour signer sur une major . Ils sortiront deux albums . Parmi les EP marquants, Sunburst and Snowblind, The Spangle Maker, Aikea-Guinea, Tiny Dynamine ou Echoes in a Shallow Bay sont à signaler. - De Cocteau Twins is een Schotse band die actief was van 1981 tot 1997. De groep wordt opgericht door Will Heggie en Robin Guthrie (1962, gitarist). Zij kiezen Elizabeth Fraser erbij als zangeres omdat ze zo apart danst in de lokale disco in Grangemouth, Schotland. De band vernoemt zich naar een minder bekend nummer van de Simple Minds. De uit drie personen bestaande band wordt al snel opgepikt door Ivo Watts die het eerste album Garlands uitbrengt op zijn 4AD-platenlabel. In 1984 vervangt Simon Raymonde Will Heggie op de basgitaar. Het geluid van de band verandert van het donkere wave-geluid van de eerste platen naar een gevarieerder geluid . De belangrijkste herkenningspunten blijven "de uit eigen verzonnen taal" bestaande zang van zangeres Fraser en de galmende gitaar van Guthrie. Eind jaren tachtig wordt het geluid van de Cocteau Twins steeds sterieler (zoals Heaven or Las Vegas). De groep verandert begin jaren negentig van platenlabel, 4AD wordt dan ingewisseld voor Fontana.
