- Celtic rock is a genre of folk rock, as well as a form of Celtic fusion which incorporates Celtic music, instrumentation and themes into a rock music context. It has been extremely prolific since the early 1970s and can be seen as a key foundation of the development of highly successful mainstream Celtic bands and popular musical performers, as well as creating important derivatives through further fusions. It has played a major role in the maintenance and definition of regional and national identities and in fostering a pan-Celtic culture. Esso unisce elementi rock a influenze di folk irlandese. Il primo passaggio dalla musica popolare a quella moderna lo si ha avuto nella prima metà anni sessanta, con la maggiore ispirazione attribuita ai Jethro Tull ed in forma più tradizionale ad Alan Stivell, e in seguito, a metà degli anni ottanta, ai The Pogues, tra i primi a fondere la musica celtica con rock e punk. Typiska instrument som förekommer, utöver gitarr, bas och trummor är folkmusikinstrument som säckpipa, banjo, fiol och flöjt. Genren blev populär på 1970-talet, inledningsvis genom Thin Lizzys versionen av den irländska folkvisan Whiskey in the Jar som kom ut 1973. På 1980-talet dök även genren Celtic punk upp, som utvecklades av det Londonbaserade irländska bandet The Pogues.
