The term is sometimes used interchangeably with underground music as a whole, though more specifically implies that the music meets the criteria of being rock, as opposed to indie pop or other possible match-ups. These criteria vary from an emphasis on rock instrumentation (electric guitars, bass guitar, live drums, and vocals) to more abstract (and debatable) rockist constructions of authenticity. Indie-rock er en forkortelse for "independent rock". Begrepet har blitt noe utvannet etter dets opprinnelse, da det siktet til en eller flere musikkstiler utgitt på uavhengige plateselskaper. I dag kan man finne musikk med liknende kjennetegn som er utgitt på større plateselskaper.
Blant de mest vanlige kjennetegn er såkalt low fidelity-lyd, dvs at produksjonen ikke er teknisk påkostet. Et eksempel er det amerikanske bandet Giant Sand. Band som Sonic Youth og Pixies nevnes ofte som indie-rockens forløpere."

Indierock (även Indie rock) är en musikgenre som ibland räknas under alternative rock och ibland som en synonym till denna genre. Begreppet används för att beteckna den musik som kännetecknas av typiska rock-attribut, som att den spelas med en uppsättning bestående av gitarr, bas, trummor och sång, samtidigt som musiken ges ut på små, oberoende independentskivbolag och inte på de stora mainstream-bolagen. Termen indierock används som ett övergripande begrepp som innefattar flera subgenres, som till exempel lo-fi, post-rock, shoegazing och indiepop. Band och stilar som räknas till indierock kännetecknas ofta för att de bekänner sig till de värderingar och ideal som finns inom underground-kulturen.

Indie rock (ou rock independente em inglês) é um estilo musical que caracteriza bandas que não são lançadas por grandes gravadoras, porém o grande sucesso de algum desses grupos os lançaram diretamente para gravadoras de grande porte, embora o som na maioria dos casos, não perca a identidade, fazendo com que tais bandas, mesmo com o sucesso de público e grande repercussão na mídia, sejam consideradas bandas alternativas.
O estilo, sonoramente, é uma especie de rock alternativo, só que não tão alternativo. E por causa dessa definição, hoje em dia existem milhares de tipos de indie rock.
As letras falam geralmente da complexidade dos relacionamentos humanos, problemas de adaptação à sociedade, timidez e do dia-à-dia urbano da juventude contemporânea.
A grande explosão indie rocker, surgiu no meio da década de 90, na Inglaterra, quando bandas como Pavement, Oasis, Blur e Placebo ganharam as paradas de sucesso em vários países, com essa popularização tais bandas foram consideradas também ícones do chamado Britpop.
No começo dos anos 2000 o sucesso das bandas americanas The Strokes e White Stripes colocaram de novo no cenário a curiosidade a cerca das bandas "indie rock" e logo ganharam o holofotes dos meios de comunicação.
Atualmente várias bandas surgem e fazem sucesso entre os jovens da geração 2000: Arctic Monkeys, The Killers, Franz Ferdinand, The Raconteurs e Bloc Party, são alguns nomes que representam o novo cenário da música indie."

Indie is een verzamelnaam die wordt gebruikt voor voornamelijk rock georiënteerde kunstmuziek die zich over het algemeen laat karakteriseren door haar houding: een afkeer van commerciële muziek en een voorliefde voor het experiment. De naam komt van het Engelse woord independent, wat onafhankelijk betekent. Indie-muziek kan vrij divers zijn, van ambient tot heavy metal, maar meestal bedoelt men met de naam een subgenre uit de alternatieve rock, zogenaamde Indie rock, die bekend werd door bands als Pavement en Sonic Youth.
De term 'indie' is soms verwarrend, omdat niet alle artiesten die onder de term worden geschaard onafhankelijk zijn. Veel indie-artiesten zijn wel verbonden aan platenmaatschappijen. Met hun imago zetten ze zich af tegen de massacultuur, maar sommige aanvankelijk onbekende artiesten groeiden uit tot grote sterren. Sinds het commerciële succes van met name R.E.M. en Nirvana wordt de term 'indie', evenals de termen 'underground' en 'cult' dan ook steeds vaker door de gevestigde platenindustrie gebruikt als marketingterm om artiesten met een tegendraads imago te promoten. Of de geproduceerde muziek ook daadwerkelijk vernieuwend of tegendraads is schijnt daarbij minder belangrijk. Een term voor grensverleggende rockmuziek die minder marketinggevoelig is is 'experimentele rock'."

Le rock indépendant (indie rock en anglais), aussi désigné sous le terme de rock alternatif (alternative rock), est une classification résultant du bouleversement occasionné par l'apparition du mouvement punk à la fin des années 1970.
La première dénomination résulte de l'indépendance revendiquée des labels vis à vis des majors du disque. Cette classification n'est donc pas purement musicale mais désigne à l'origine des disques (et non des groupes) publiés par de "petits" labels. Nombre de groupes sont ainsi qualifiés (étymologiquement à tort) de "rock indé" alors qu'ils publient leurs albums chez des majors. Par extension cependant la catégorie "indé" est aujourd'hui plus utilisée pour qualifier un courant très vaste de la musique rock qu'en fonction du statut contractuel des groupes.
La deuxième (Rock alternatif), désigne à la base plutôt un côté marginal par rapport aux courants "principaux" du rock. Très utilisée aux États-Unis, cette dénomination l'est nettement moins en France, où elle a souvent été utilisée comme fourre-tout, à tel point qu'il devient parfois difficile de distinguer le rock alternatif des autres formes de rock. On lui préfère aujourd'hui le terme de rock indépendant; à titre d'exemple, il n'existe pas de rayon « alternatif » dans les grands magasins de disques français."
