- The emperor, however, put the Milan militias to flight as far as the Carroccio, while most of the Lombard militias fled to the city. (en)
- Milan, however, when it had received sure information of the headlong advance of its army, did not wait for the other towns, but with Piacenza and captains from the picked troops of Verona, Brescia, Novara and Vercelli, marched out on the first Saturday of June with its caroccio and came in high courage to a place suited to themselves between Barrano and Brescia, at the fifteenth milestone from the city, and about the third hour of the day. (en)
- The Lombards, ready to win or die on the field, placed their army inside a large pit, so that when the battle was in full swing, no one could escape. (en)
- But when the Emperor's larger force came up, the Lombards unwillingly gave way, for as they wished to find safety by the Milanese caroccio, they could not stand fast in face of the persecutor. However, the pressure of the refugees forced them to retire to a place half a mile beyond the caroccio. (en)
- They then sent towards Como seven hundred men-at-arms to learn from what quarter their most powerful and redoubtable enemy was advancing upon them. When they had gone almost three miles they met three hundred Germans {og. Alamanni} in whose steps Frederick was following with all his army, girded for battle. Without delay enemy rushed upon enemy and with their drawn swords hacked into one another. (en)
