Gargoyles was noted for its relatively dark tone, complex story arcs, and melodrama; character arcs were heavily employed throughout the series, as were Shakespearean themes. The series also received favorable comparisons to Cybersix, Batman: The Animated Series, and X-Men. A video game adaptation and a spin-off comic series were released in 1995. È uno dei più ambiziosi progetti della Disney, una serie dai toni cupi, con storie strutturate su ampi archi narrativi e sotto trame di lunga portata. Protagonista della serie è un gruppo di gargolle, creature mitologiche che si trasformano in pietra per effetto dei raggi del sole e che vivono di notte. Dopo aver dormito per mille anni a causa di un incantesimo si risvegliano nel mondo moderno, nella città di New York, e dopo una serie di vicissitudini decidono di difenderla dal crimine. La serie presenta una certa influenza dalle opere di Shakespeare, da cui recupera alcuni personaggi mettendoli in contatto tra di loro, in particolare dal Macbeth e dal Sogno di una notte di mezza estate.
