| - Dolby Surround was the earliest consumer version of Dolby's multichannel analog film sound decoding format Dolby Stereo introduced to the public in 1982 during the time home video recording formats (such as Betamax and VHS) were earlier introducing Stereo and HiFi capability.The term Dolby Surround is used as not to confuse theater stereo which is at least four channels of audio with home stereo which is two. When a Dolby Stereo/Dolby Surround soundtrack is produced, four channels of audio information—left, center, right, and mono surround—are matrix-encoded onto two audio tracks. The stereo information is then carried on stereo sources such as videotapes, laserdiscs and television broadcasts from which the surround information can be decoded by a processor to recreate the original four-channel surround sound. Without the decoder, the information still plays in standard stereo or monaural. As the technology of a Dolby Surround decoder is virtually similar in its implementation of decoding the monaural surround soundtrack, many Dolby Stereo encoded films could be transferred with little change to the stereo soundtrack lowering the costs of re-recording the audio of a film to video. In fact most L/R/S Dolby Surround decoders included a modified Dolby B decoder as part of their design.

- Dolby Surround ist ein analoges Mehrkanal-Tonsystem, das mit Hilfe einer Matrixkodierung vier Tonkanäle in zwei Tonspuren unterbringt. Die beiden zusätzlichen Kanäle sind keine vollwertigen Tonkanäle, sondern sind nur für Effekte und Akzente gedacht. Der mittlere Kanal (Center genannt, im Kino hinter der Leinwand angebracht) wird dabei aus denjenigen Signalanteilen erkannt, die auf den beiden bestehenden (Links-/Rechts-)Kanälen phasenkohärent vertreten sind, während der Effekt-Kanal (Surround/Rear) mittels einer Phasenumkehr (das Signal wird links und rechts gegenphasig eingemischt) kodiert ist. Zusätzlich ist der Effekt-Kanal nur in einem begrenzten Frequenzbereich nutzbar, um Verfremdungen der Signalübertragung in höherfrequenten Bereichen zu vermeiden. Signale, die keine Phasenbeziehungen (dekorreliert) zueinander aufweisen, werden zu den jeweiligen Hauptlautsprechern Links und Rechts decodiert. Eine saubere Kanaltrennung ist somit nicht möglich. Dolby-Surround-Signale können prinzipiell in jeder Art von qualitativ hochwertigem Stereo-Übertragungssystem übertragen werden, z.B. im Radio, Fernsehen, auf Audio-CDs, VHS-Kassetten, Schallplatten, Musikkassetten etc. Man erkennt Dolby Surround vor allem an dem Unterschied beider Kanäle; dieser ist sehr groß, und somit können die 2 anderen Kanäle leicht generiert werden.
Dolby Surround besteht aus: Front links, Front rechts, Mittensignal (Center) und Surround links und rechts. (Surround links und rechts sind identisch). Ein LFE-Kanal (Subwoofer) ist nicht vorhanden, wird jedoch bei gebräuchlichen Wiedergabeanlagen aus dem vorhandenen Signal mittels einer Frequenzweiche (Tiefpass) generiert.
Dolby Surround ist abwärtskompatibel zu Stereo, d.h. man kann ein Dolby Surround-Signal problemlos auf jedem Stereo-Gerät wiedergeben. Auf guten Stereo-Lautsprechern stellt sich ein gewisser Surround-Effekt dabei durch die Phasenlage von selbst ein, d.h. das Surround-Signal scheint teilweise von hinten zu kommen, auch wenn dort gar kein Lautsprecher ist. Das Matrixsignal ist auch nach der Bearbeitung in einem guten Stereo-Gerät, wie z.B. einem Equalizer, noch dekodierbar.
Im professionellen Kino- und Studiobereich heißt Dolby Surround Dolby Stereo, hier wird die Dekodierung über einen Spezialchip erledigt. Dieser Chip hielt nach einiger Zeit auch Einzug in die Heim-HiFi-Welt unter der Bezeichnung Dolby Surround Pro Logic.
Dolby Surround wurde von den Dolby Laboratories Inc entwickelt und wird von diesen lizenziert. Mittlerweile hat Dolby Surround im digitalen Videobereich an Bedeutung verloren, durch neue Speichermedien wie die DVD und die Laserdisc haben neue, digitale Tonsysteme, wie Dolby Digital und DTS die analogen Formate verdrängt. Auf VHS-Kassetten und im Audiobereich, also vor allem auf Audio-CDs, wo systembedingt Dolby Digital und DTS nicht zum Einsatz kommen können, wird Dolby Surround dagegen heute noch viel genutzt. (de)

Il logo del Dolby Surround è quindi usato sia per indicare che l'audio è Dolby Surround (ad esempio si può trovare sulla copertina di una pubblicazione home video o nei titoli di un programma televisivo), sia per indicare che un apparecchio, o un dispositivo, elettronico è in grado di codificare e/o decodificare l'audio Dolby Surround, Dolby Surround Pro Logic II, Dolby Stereo e Dolby Stereo Spectral Recording (ad esempio si può trovare sul frontale di un amplificatore audio per l'home theatre).
