Nasqué el 28 d'abril de 1402 (segons altres fonts, el 4 de febrer) a Tetzcuco i morí el 1472. Era fill del sisè senyor dels txitximeques, , senyor de la ciutat de Tezcuco, i de la princesa mexica Matlalcihuatzin, filla del monarca asteca Huitzilíhuitl, segon senyor de Tenochtitlán. Ejerció el poder y se desempeñó notablemente como poeta, erudito y arquitecto. Era hijo del sexto señor de los acolhuas, Ixtlilxóchitl (del náhuatl: Ixtlilxochitl ‘flor oscura’), señor de la ciudad de Tetzcoco, y de la princesa mexica Matlalcihuatzin, hija del tlatoani mexica Huitzilíhuitl, segundo señor de Tenochtitlan. Unlike other high-profile Mexican figures from the century preceding Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire, Nezahualcoyotl was not fully Mexica; his father's people were the Acolhua, another Nahuan people settled in the eastern part of the Valley of Mexico, on the coast of Lake Texcoco. His mother, however, was the sister of Chimalpopoca, the Mexica king of Tenochtitlan. He is best remembered for his poetry, but according to accounts by his descendants and biographers, Fernando de Alva Cortés Ixtlilxóchitl and Juan Bautista Pomar, he had an experience of an "Unknown, Unknowable Lord of Everywhere" to whom he built an entirely empty temple in which no blood sacrifices of any kind were allowed — not even those of animals. Onder zijn bestuur bloeide de hoofdstad Texcoco op. Het werd de belangrijkste stad, op Tenochtitlan na, binnen het Azteekse rijk. Nezahualcoyotl was een bekende dichter, filosoof en kunstliefhebber. Hij was ook vaardig in technische zaken. Er werd van hem gezegd dat hij persoonlijk de dijk door het Texcocomeer heeft ontworpen. Hij liet bovendien een botanische en dierentuin aanleggen. Hij liet de wetten van Texcoco opschrijven en bewaren in een bibliotheek, de eerste in Amerika. De Spaanse veroveraars zouden Texcoco later "het Athene van het westelijk halfrond" noemen. Nezahualcoyotl was de zoon van koning Ixtlilxochitl I en zijn vrouw , een dochter van de Azteekse keizer Huitzilihuitl.
