- Un tlamatini (del náhuatl: tlamatini ‘el que sabe algo o el que sabe cosas’) (plural: tlamatinimeh o tlamatinih), traducido como hombre sabio, era el equivalente a un filósofo en la época de los mexicas. También eran poetas, y debatían temas sobre la existencia, la verdad, la naturaleza del cosmos y el lugar del hombre en él. Contribuían al desarrollo de aspectos filosóficos ligados a la religión, y eran maestros en el calmécac, la escuela de los sacerdotes y nobles. The word is analyzable as derived from the transitive verb mati "to know" with the prefix tla- indicating an unspecified inanimate object translatable by "something" and the derivational suffix -ni meaning "a person who are characterized by ...": hence tla-mati-ni "a person who is characterized by knowing something" or more to the point "a knower". The famous Nahuatl language translator and interpreter Miguel León-Portilla refers to the tlamatini as philosophers and they are the subject of his book Aztec Thought and Culture. (en)
