A seguito della sparatoria e relativo massacro di Charleston avvenuto all'interno della "Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church" di Charleston (Carolina del Sud) nel 2015 ad opera del ventunenne Dylann Roof - che ha portato alla morte di 9 persone e condotto alla rimozione dei memoriali e monumenti confederati a New Orleans, Baltimora e altrove - nel corso del 2017 un numero sempre maggiore di monumenti e memoriali collegati è stato deturpato, vandalizzato e finanche distrutto. Da quel momento in poi è stata proposta da più parti l'immediata rimozione di altri monumenti e toponimi presenti nelle maggiori città americane e dedicati a più o meno celebri personalità del passato: le controversie sui memoriali e i monumenti negli Stati Uniti d'America sono proseguite anche nel 2018, con esiti che rimangono allo stato dei fatti quantomai imprevedibili.
