- Birmingham has seen 1400 years of growth, during which time it has evolved from a small 7th century Anglo Saxon hamlet on the edge of the Forest of Arden at the fringe of early Mercia into a major city. A combination of immigration, innovation and civic pride helped to bring about major social and economic reforms and create the Industrial Revolution, inspiring the growth of similar cities across the world. The last 200 years have seen Birmingham rise from market town to the fastest-growing city of the 19th century, spurred on by a combination of civic investment, scientific achievement, commercial innovation and by a steady influx of migrant workers into its suburbs. By the 20th century Birmingham had become the metropolitan hub of the United Kingdom's manufacturing and automotive industries, having earned itself a reputation first as a city of canals, then of cars, and most recently as a major European convention and shopping destination. At the beginning of the 21st century, Birmingham now lies at the heart of a major post-industrial metropolis surrounded by significant educational, manufacturing, shopping, sporting and conferencing facilities. Nonostante siano state trovate tracce di presenza umana ben precedenti, l'insediamento vero e proprio si è formato come un piccolo villaggio anglosassone nel VII secolo, fino a diventare una grande città industriale ai giorni d'oggi. Una combinazione di immigrazione, innovazione e orgoglio civico ha contribuito a realizzare importanti riforme sociali ed economiche ed a creare la rivoluzione industriale, ispirando la crescita di città simili in tutto il mondo. Gli ultimi 200 anni hanno visto Birmingham crescere da città mercato relegata al medioevo a città in più rapida crescita del XIX secolo, stimolata da una combinazione di investimenti civici, risultati scientifici, innovazione commerciale e da un costante afflusso di lavoratori migranti nelle sue periferie. Nel XX secolo Birmingham era diventata il fulcro metropolitano delle industrie manifatturiere e automobilistiche del Regno Unito, essendosi guadagnata una reputazione prima come città di canali, poi di automobili e, più recentemente, come una delle principali convention europee e destinazione per lo shopping.
