- Extended technique ist ein Begriff, der unorthodoxe oder „falsche“ Techniken beschreibt, Musikinstrumente zu spielen oder zu singen. Dazu gehören insbesondere alternative Spieltechniken wie Mehrklänge (Multiphonics), Mikrotöne, Zirkular- oder Daueratmung, das Erzeugen von Obertönen oder Geräuschen durch besondere Spieltechniken wie Flageolettgriffe, die Abänderung eines Instruments (präpariertes Klavier, präparierte Gitarre) und das Spielen eines Blasinstruments ohne Mundstück (oder mit dem Mundstück eines völlig anderen Instruments). Eine entsprechende Erweiterung der Tonsprache wurde durch Komponisten wie Henry Cowell, George Crumb, John Cage oderHarry Partch stark vorangetrieben. Die „erweiterten“ Techniken werden besonders in , Noise und Improvisationsmusik, Elektroakustische Musik eingesetzt, manchmal und auch in der Klangkunst und in Alternative Music wie Noise-Rock (beispielsweise durch Gruppen wie Sonic Youth oder, als Pionier auf diesem Gebiet, durch Jimi Hendrix) und Elektronische Musik wie IDM. Ursprünglich unorthodoxe Techniken können sich mit der Zeit als anerkannte Spieltechnik etablieren, so beispielsweise die Verwendung eines Bottleneck oder bestimmter Tremolotechniken beim Gitarrenspiel oder die eines Plunger-Dämpfers beim Trompetenspiel. - In music, extended technique is unconventional, unorthodox, or non-traditional methods of singing or of playing musical instruments employed to obtain unusual sounds or timbres. Composers’ use of extended techniques is not specific to contemporary music (for instance, Hector Berlioz’s use of col legno in his Symphonie Fantastique is an extended technique) and it transcends compositional schools and styles. Extended techniques have also flourished in popular music. Nearly all jazz performers make significant use of extended techniques of one sort or another, particularly in more recent styles like free jazz or avant-garde jazz. Musicians in free improvisation have also made heavy use of extended techniques. Examples of extended techniques include bowing under the bridge of a string instrument or with two different bows, using key clicks on a wind instrument, blowing and overblowing into a wind instrument without a mouthpiece, or inserting objects on top of the strings of a piano. Twentieth-century exponents of extended techniques include Henry Cowell (use of fists and arms on the keyboard, playing inside the piano), John Cage (prepared piano), and George Crumb. The Kronos Quartet, which has been among the most active ensembles in promoting contemporary American works for string quartet, frequently plays music which stretches the manner in which sound can be drawn out of instruments. - Por técnicas extendidas se conocen las técnicas de interpretación utilizadas en música mediante las que se ejecutan técnicas no convencionales, ni tradicionales ni ortodoxas de cantar o tocar instrumentos musicales con el objetivo de obtener sonidos inusuales. La utilización de las técnicas extendidas por los compositores no se limita a la música contemporánea. Por ejemplo, Hector Berlioz utilizó el col legno en su Sinfonía fantástica. Además, trasciende las escuelas compositivas y los estilos. No obstante, el uso de estas técnicas es menos frecuente en el período de la práctica común (c. 1600 - 1900) que en la música académica del siglo XX desde aproximadamente 1900. Las técnicas extendidas también se han extendido a la música popular. Por ejemplo en canciones como Olsen Olsen de Sigur Ros, donde se emplea el arco de violín para tocar las cuerdas de la guitarra eléctrica. Esponenti del XX secolo di tecniche estese includono Henry Cowell (uso di pugni e braccia sulla tastiera, suonare all'interno del piano), John Cage (pianoforte preparato) e George Crumb.
