Entre 1981 i 2008 va mantenir una relació amb l'actriu , i la parella van tenir una filla, l'actriu, directora i guionista . Aficionat al futbol, és seguidor del Crystal Palace. Afeccionat a la interpretació des del col·legi, on restà amb el grup de teatre, Bill volia ser periodista, però no li arribava la nota, així que passa a ser missatger per a un diari, i a viure a París un temps intentant escriure la gran novel·la del seu temps, on es quedà sense diners i l'ambaixada anglesa li hagué de pagar la seva repatriació a Anglaterra.
