- La Comarca (The Shire en su versión original en inglés) es una localización ficticia que forma parte del legendarium creado por el escritor británico J. R. R. Tolkien y que aparece en sus novelas El hobbit y El Señor de los Anillos. Es una región situada en el noroeste de la Tierra Media, uno de los continentes del mundo ficticio de Arda donde trascurre la mayor parte del legendarium de J. R. R. Tolkien. Se encuentra, a su vez, dentro de la gran región de Eriador, donde anteriormente existió el reino de Arnor. Está poblada exclusivamente por hobbits, una raza emparentada con los hombres y caracterizada por su baja estatura. Poblada a mediados de la Tercera Edad del Sol, su historia conocida es reducida y sin apenas acontecimientos importantes debido a la naturaleza pacífica de sus habitantes, a excepción de los hechos ocurridos durante la Guerra del Anillo. En oestron recibe los nombres de Sûza (que significa «Comarca») o Sûzat («la Comarca») y en el habla de los hobbits alude solamente su tierra, pero en Gondor sûza significa "comarca" en sentido general. Por otro lado, en la lengua élfica sindarin es llamada i Drann. También recibe la denominación de Cuatro Cuadernas, nombre que hace referencia a su división territorial. Si bien no aparece mencionada como tal en la novela El hobbit, J. R. R. Tolkien ya tenía entonces una idea de cómo era la Comarca, creada «oficialmente» durante la composición del primer capítulo de El Señor de los Anillos e inspirada principalmente en el barrio de Sarehole, Birmingham, donde el autor vivió durante su infancia. R. R. Tolkien, où se déroulent de nombreux passages de ses romans Le Hobbit et Le Seigneur des anneaux. Fondé au milieu du Troisième Âge, la Comté est une région du Nord-Ouest de la Terre du Milieu, au cœur de l'Eriador, un territoire correspondant à l'ancien royaume d'Arnor. Il est peuplé exclusivement de Hobbits, créatures apparentées aux Hommes caractérisées par leur petite taille. Du fait de la nature pacifique de ses habitants, l'histoire de la Comté est presque dépourvue d'événements marquants, à l'exception des faits survenus durant la guerre de l'Anneau. Les Hobbits de la Comté parlent le hobbitique, une variété d'occidentalien, et nomment dans cette langue leur pays Sûza (« Comté ») ou Sûzat (« la Comté »). Son nom en sindarin, langue des Elfes Gris, est i Drann. Il est aussi appelé Quatre Quartiers, nom qui fait référence à sa division territoriale. The Shire is an inland area settled exclusively by hobbits, the Shire-folk, largely sheltered from the goings-on in the rest of Middle-earth. It is in the northwest of the continent, in the region of Eriador and the Kingdom of Arnor. The Shire is the scene of action at the beginning and end of Tolkien's The Hobbit, and of the sequel, The Lord of the Rings. Five of the protagonists in these stories have their homeland in the Shire: Bilbo Baggins (the title character of The Hobbit), and four members of the Fellowship of the Ring: Frodo Baggins, Sam Gamgee, Merry Brandybuck and Pippin Took. The main action in The Lord of the Rings returns to the Shire near the end of the book, in "The Scouring of the Shire", when the homebound hobbits find the area under the control of Saruman's ruffians, and set things to rights. Tolkien based the Shire's landscapes, climate, flora, fauna, and placenames on rural England where he lived, first in Worcestershire as a boy, then in Oxfordshire. In Peter Jackson's films of both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, the Shire was represented by countryside and constructed hobbit-holes on a farm near Matamata in New Zealand, which became a tourist destination.
