- The humanitarian response to the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake of a magnitude of 9.1 was prompted by one of the worst natural disasters of modern times. On 26 December 2004, the earthquake, which struck off the northwest coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra, generated a tsunami that wreaked havoc along much of the rim of the Indian Ocean. Particularly hard-hit were the countries of Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka and Thailand. About 230,000 people were killed, tens of thousands more were injured, and 1.7 million became homeless and displaced. (en)
- La mobilisation internationale face à la catastrophe du 26 décembre est sans conteste la plus importante de l'histoire de l'aide humanitaire. Les Nations unies ont rapidement estimé à 5 milliards de dollars US les besoins pour l'assistance, la reconstruction et le soutien de moyen terme aux pays touchés par le séisme et les tsunamis. Pour organiser l'assistance, la plupart des pays se sont regroupés sous l'égide des Nations unies, et les organisations non gouvernementales (ONG) ont commencé à collaborer étroitement avec l'organisation mondiale. Les États-Unis, par la voix de George W. Bush, ont souhaité mettre en place une coalition internationale qui se substituerait aux Nations unies, ce qui a suscité de vives réactions de protestation, notamment dans les pays de l'Union européenne. Mais à la suite du organisé par l'ONU, Colin Powell a annoncé que la coalition allait être intégrée aux actions de l'ONU, car selon lui elle a rempli son rôle. Il faut également noter la très forte mobilisation des particuliers, les dons privés aux ONG étant très importants. Le fait que des pays, à travers toute la planète, aient été touchés par la mort de dizaines ou centaines de leurs compatriotes, n'est peut-être pas étranger à la sensibilité particulière constatée. Pada tanggal 26 Desember, gempa bumi Samudra Hindia 2004 terjadi di lepas pantai utara Sumatra, Indonesia dan mengakibatkan tsunami yang meluluh-lantakkan daerah pesisir di sepanjang Samudra Hindia. Negara yang terkena dampak terbesar adalah India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka dan Thailand. Lebih dari 280.000 orang tewas, puluhan ribu lainnya luka-luka dan lebih dari satu juta orang kehilangan tempat tinggal. (in)
