- متغيرة شطرنج (أو شطرنج غير عادي) هي لعبة مشتقة من لعبة الشطرنج ومتعلقة بها ومستوحاة منها. وفي سياق مسائل الشطرنج تسمى متغيرات الشطرنج: شطرنج فنتازي، شطرنج هرطقي أو حيث تستخدم بعض المتغيرات في مسائل الشطرنج فقط ولا تستخدم في اللعب الحقيقي، ويتجلى الفرق بين الشطرنج القياسي والمتغيرات في واحد أو أكثر من الأمور التالية:
* الاختلاف في قوانين الأخذ، طريقة الحركة، هدف اللعبة...
* إضافة، تبديل أو إزالة في قطع الشطرنج القياسي (القطع غير القياسية تسمى قطع خيالية).

- Eine Schachvariante ist jedes Spiel, das von Schach abgeleitet ist. Eine Schachvariante kann ähnlich wie Schach sein oder völlig davon abweichen. "International" or "Western" chess itself is one of a family of games which have related origins and could be considered variants of each other. Chess developed from chaturanga, from which other members of this family, such as shatranj, Tamerlane chess,shogi, and xiangqi also evolved. Many chess variants are designed to be played with the equipment of regular chess.
