- The 1991 Soviet Top League season was the 54th since its establishment and the last one. Dynamo Kyiv were the defending 13-times champions. A total of sixteen teams participated in the league, twelve of them have contested in the 1990 season while the remaining four were promoted from the Soviet First League due to withdrawals. The representatives of the Baltic states as well as Georgia chose not to take part in the competition. The season began on 10 March and lasted until 2 November 1991. The season was won by PFC CSKA Moscow that returned to the top league prior to the last season while winning the Soviet Cup competition as well. The season's culmination occurred in its final rounds, when the army team managed to overtake Spartak, while with four rounds left in the season, Spartak was leading the table a point ahead of CSKA and a recent thrashing of Dynamo Moscow 7 to 1. Due to participants withdrawal in the preceding season four new teams entered the league. Upon the conclusion of the season no clubs were relegated and 12 out of its 16 participants formed a base for either the Russian or the Ukrainian competitions, while other four participants joined their own newly formed national leagues. If the Soviet Union had remained intact, Metalist Kharkiv and Lokomotiv Moscow would have been relegated to the Soviet First League for the next season, while FC Rotor Volgograd and FC Tiligul Tiraspol would have been promoted to the Top League for 1992. The top six clubs of the league later entered European competitions for their respective nations. The Ukrainian clubs chose to qualify through a separate national competition. (en)

- In 1991 werd de 54ste en laatste editie van de Sovjet Top Liga gespeeld voor voetbalclubs uit Sovjet-Unie. De competitie werd gespeeld van 10 maart tot 31 oktober. CSKA Moskou werd kampioen. Hoewel de Sovjet-Unie pas eind 1991 zou ophouden te bestaan trokken de Georgische teams zich terug uit de competitie om in de eigen nationale competitie te gaan spelen waardoor vaste waarde Dinamo Tbilisi en het pas gepromoveerde Goeria Lantsjchoeti niet meer in de Top Liga aantraden. OOk Zjalgiris Vilnjoes, dat in het voorgaande seizoen nog vierde was geworden verliet de competitie na één speeldag en ging als Žalgiris Vilnius in de Litouwse competitie spelen. Het Europese ticket van Zjalgiris ging naar Tsjernomorets Odessa. Na dit seizoen viel de Sovjet-Unie uit elkaar en gingen de clubs in hun nieuwe nationale competitie spelen. De Premjer-Liga werd de rechtsopvolger van de Top Liga en hierin gingen de zes Russische clubs spelen, aangevuld met tweedeklassers. De zes Oekraïense clubs gingen in de Vysjtsja Liha spelen. (nl)

- Rozgrywki radzieckiej wyższej ligi w sezonie 1991 były pięćdziesiątymi trzecimi i ostatnimi w historii radzieckiej pierwszej ligi. W rozgrywkach wzięło udział szesnaście drużyn, w tym cztery, które awansowały z drugiej ligi – Spartak Władykaukaz, Paxtakor Taszkent, Metałurh Zaporoże i Lokomotiw Moskwa. Po sezonie ligę rozwiązano. Mistrzowski tytuł po raz 7-my wywalczyła drużyna CSKA Moskwa. Królem strzelców ligi został Igor Koływanow z Dinama Moskwa, który zdobył 18 goli. Po sezonie zespoły z Ukraińskiej SRR przystąpiły do ukraińskiej pierwszej ligi, Ararat Erywań – ormiańskiej pierwszej ligi, Dynama Mińsk – białoruskiej pierwszej ligi, Paxtakor Taszkent – uzbeckiej pierwszej ligi, a Pamir Duszanbe – tadżyckiej pierwszej ligi. Був розіграний з 10 березня по 2 листопада 1991 року, участь у змаганні брали 16 команд. Переможцем став московський ЦСКА (усьоме в історії). Через відмову від участі у союзній першості двох грузинських команд, а згодом і вільнюського «Жальгіріса», у попередньому сезоні вищої ліги змагалися лише 13 команд. Тому до участі у турнірі вищої ліги 1991 року було долучено відразу три найкращих команди з першої ліги («Спартак» (Владикавказ), «Пахтакор» (Ташкент) та запорізький «Металург»), а також і четвертого за силою представника першої ліги — московський «Локомотив», який переміг у стикових матчах найслабшого представника елітного дивізіону команду «Ротор» (Волгоград).
