- Die Metropolitan Railway, auch als Met bekannt, war eine Vorgängergesellschaft der heutigen London Underground. Sie betrieb einen ausgedehnten Personen- und Güterverkehr im Großraum der britischen Hauptstadt London. Ihre erste Strecke wurde am 10. Januar 1863 eröffnet und führte vom Bahnhof Paddington nach Farringdon in der Nähe der City of London. Es handelte sich dabei um die erste U-Bahn der Welt. Die erste Strecke wurde an beiden Enden verlängert, woraus bis zum Jahr 1884 der Inner Circle entstand – eine zusammen mit der District Railway betriebene Ringstrecke rund um die Innenstadt, welche die meisten Kopfbahnhöfe miteinander verband. Bereits 1864 erreichte die Met Hammersmith und 1877 Richmond. Zur wichtigsten Strecke entwickelte sich ab 1869 die nordwestliche Stammstrecke ab Baker Street. Diese führte in den ländlichen Raum von Middlesex, wo sie die Entstehung mehrerer neuer Vorstädte stimulierte. Sie reichte schließlich bis Verney Junction in der Grafschaft Buckinghamshire, nordöstlich von Oxford gelegen und mehr als 80 Kilometer vom Zentrum Londons entfernt. Letztlich sollte die Met das Herzstück eines Eisenbahnnetzes werden, das von Manchester und Liverpool über London und einen Tunnel unter dem Ärmelkanal bis nach Paris reichen sollte; diese Pläne zerschlugen sich jedoch bald. 1905 führte die Met den elektrischen Betrieb ein und ersetzte die Dampflokomotiven auf dem größten Teil ihres Streckennetzes. Die Met vermarktete nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg die neu entstehenden Wohnsiedlungen entlang ihrer Strecken unter der Bezeichnung Metro-land und pries sie als ländlich anmutende Vorstadtidylle an. Am 1. Juli 1933 ging die Met zusammen mit den U-Bahnen der Underground Electric Railways Company of London sowie verschiedenen Straßenbahn- und Busgesellschaften im öffentlich-rechtlichen Unternehmen London Passenger Transport Board (LPTB) auf. Unlike other railway companies in the London area, the Met developed land for housing, and after World War I promoted housing estates near the railway using the "Metro-land" brand. On 1 July 1933, the Met was amalgamated with the Underground Electric Railways Company of London and the capital's tramway and bus operators to form the London Passenger Transport Board.
