- The BMW M12/13 turbo was a 1499.8 cc 4-cylinder turbocharged Formula One engine, based on the standard BMW M10 engine introduced in 1961, powered the F1 cars of Brabham, Arrows and Benetton. Nelson Piquet won the FIA Formula One Drivers' Championship in 1983 driving a Brabham powered by the BMW M12/13 turbo. It was the first Drivers' Championship to be won using a turbocharged engine. The engine also powered the BMW GTP and in the 2.0-litre naturally-aspirated form, the successful March Engineering Formula Two cars. BMW engineers figured the engine produced around 1,400 hp at maximum boost, however the BMW engine dynamometer could not go beyond 1,280 bhp. (en)
- Il BMW M12/13, successivamente ridenominato Megatron M12/13, è stato il motore di Formula 1 che la BMW realizzò per correre nella massima serie, durante il periodo in cui erano ammessi i propulsori turbo. Tra le sue caratteristiche principali spiccano l'architettura e la potenza erogata.Da molti è ritenuto il più potente motore in condizioni di qualifica mai usato in Formula 1.È noto infatti che nelle versioni usate durante le prove di qualificazione fosse in grado di erogare 1.300 cv.Tuttavia questi dati non sono mai stati resi noti dalla casa costruttrice, anche se Paul Rosche, l'ingegnere che lo progettò, intervistato confermò questi valori; anche altri motori contemporanei sono stati accreditati di potenze simili.Rimane comunque, anche a detta dei piloti che hanno avuto modo di provarlo, uno dei migliori propulsori sovralimentati della Formula 1 degli anni ottanta per quanto riguarda le prestazioni; tuttavia, di tanto in tanto, ha sofferto di problemi di affidabilità.
