The island, a California Historical Landmark, has been used by humans for a variety of purposes, including seasonal hunting and gathering by indigenous peoples, water and timber supply for European ships, ranching by Mexicans, United States military installations, a United States Public Health Service Quarantine Station, and a U.S. Bureau of Immigration inspection and detention facility. The Angel Island Immigration Station, on the northeast corner of the island, which has been designated a National Historic Landmark, was where officials detained, inspected, and examined approximately one million immigrants, who primarily came from Asia. Under the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, the first United States law to restrict a group of immigrants based on their race, nationality, and class, all arriving Chinese immigrants were to be examined by immigration or customs agents. - La Isla de los Ángeles (en inglés Angel Island) es la isla más grande de la bahía de San Francisco, en California (Estados Unidos). Fue la primera tierra visitada por el oficial naval español Juan de Ayala y su tripulación en la expedición que realizaron a la bahía en 1775. Ayala le puso el nombre de "Isla de los Ángeles", que en inglés se convirtió primero en "Los Angeles Island" y posteriormente en "Angel Island", que es como se la conoce hoy. En el siglo XIX, tras la incorporación de California a Estados Unidos, fue convertida en puesto de defensa militar. Más tarde, entre 1910 y 1940, fue utilizada como estación de inmigración para las personas provenientes del océano Pacífico, principalmente de China. Elle offre des vues spectaculaires sur la ville de San Francisco, les hauteurs du comté de Marin, ainsi que sur le mont Tamalpais. Het 3,107 km² grote eiland behoort tot Marin County en wordt in zijn geheel omvat door het Angel Island State Park. Het is het grootste eiland in de Baai van San Francisco. Mount Caroline Livermore is met z'n 240 meter het hoogste punt van Angel Island. Volgens de volkstelling van 2000 woonden er 57 mensen. Het eiland is opeenvolgend gebruikt als ranch, legerkamp, fort, quarantainekamp en . Tussen 1910 en 1940 passeerden immigranten uit China, Korea, India en Japan langs Angel Island, waardoor het eiland de bijnaam "Ellis Island of the West" meekreeg. De Aziaten werden maandenlang in het immigratiekamp vastgehouden en verhoord, omdat de VS sinds 1882 de immigratie van met name Chinezen probeerden af te remmen. Centrum działało od 1775 i przez cały okres istnienia przyjęło 175 tysięcy imigrantów.
