- Downside Abbey is a Benedictine monastery in England and the senior community of the English Benedictine Congregation. Until 2019, the community had close links with Downside School, for the education of children aged eleven to eighteen. Both the abbey and the school are at Stratton-on-the-Fosse, between Westfield and Shepton Mallet in Somerset, South West England. In 2020, the monastic community announced that it would move away from the present monastery and seek a new place to live. On 27 October 2021, the monastic community further announced that as part of their transition they would move in Spring of 2022 to the temporary accommodation of "Southgate House, in the grounds of Buckfast Abbey, Devon, where we will live as the Community of St Gregory the Great". As of 2020, the monastic community of Downside Abbey was home to fifteen monks. The Abbey Church of St Gregory the Great, begun in 1873 and unfinished, is a Grade I listed building. Sir Nikolaus Pevsner described its Gothic style as "the most splendid demonstration of the renaissance of Roman Catholicism in England". (en)

Una de sus principales apostolados es la Escuela de Downside, para la educación de los niños de edades de once a dieciocho. Exalumnos de la escuela se conocen como antiguos gregorianos. Tanto la abadía y la escuela se encuentran en Stratton-on-the-Fosse entre Westfield y Shepton Mallet, en Somerset, al suroeste de Inglaterra, Reino Unido. La abadía ha sido designado por la organización «English Heritage» como un edificio de grado I edificio. L'église elle-même a le statut de basilique mineure depuis 1935. Saint Olivier Plunket y est inhumé. L'abbaye fait partie de la congrégation bénédictine anglaise. C'est à l'abbaye de Downside que le poète Siegfried Sassoon s'est converti au catholicisme. L'établissement scolaire de Downside School, qui dépend de l'abbaye, est l'un des collèges catholiques les plus connus de Grande-Bretagne. Parmi ses anciens élèves, on compte notamment le cardinal Vaughan, l'historien de l'art John Pope-Hennessy, l'écrivain Brion Gysin ou encore le journaliste Auberon Waugh, fils aîné d'Evelyn Waugh. Le origini dell'abbazia risalgono alla comunità benedettina inglese fondata nel 1607 a Douai, nei Paesi Bassi spagnoli, intitolata a san Gregorio magno e a sant'Agostino di Canterbury. Organizzatore e primo priore dei benedettini di Douai fu il gallese John Roberts, che vi accolse numerosi monaci inglesi che si erano rifugiati tra i benedettini della congregazione di Valladolid dopo la dissoluzione dei monasteri inglesi. Il loro primo monastero fu costruito dall'abate di San Vedasto di Arras nel 1611. L'abbazia di Downside Douai divenne punto di partenza per numerose missioni clandestine in Inghilterra: due monaci, Ambrose Barlow e lo stesso John Roberts, furono scoperti e giustiziati (sono tra i quaranta martiri d'Inghilterra e Galles canonizzati da papa Paolo VI nel 1970). Dopo l'invasione francese delle Fiandre, i benedettini inglesi furono espulsi e vennero riaccolti in Inghilterra: la comunità fu ospitata per alcuni anni ad Acton Burnell, nel Shropshire, e nel 1814 si stabilì a Downside, nel Somerset. La costruzione del monastero, in stile gotico, fu completata nel 1876 e nel 1899 fu elevato ad abbazia. La chiesa abbaziale, insignita del titolo e della dignità di basilica minore il 10 aprile 1935, conserva le reliquie di sant'Oliver Plunkett. (it)
