- The Dream of Gerontius, Op. 38, is a work for voices and orchestra in two parts composed by Edward Elgar in 1900, to text from the poem by John Henry Newman. It relates the journey of a pious man's soul from his deathbed to his judgment before God and settling into Purgatory. Elgar disapproved of the use of the term "oratorio" for the work (and the term occurs nowhere in the score), though his wishes are not always followed. The piece is widely regarded as Elgar's finest choral work, and some consider it his masterpiece. The work was composed for the Birmingham Music Festival of 1900; the first performance took place on 3 October 1900, in Birmingham Town Hall. It was badly performed at the premiere, but later performances in Germany revealed its stature. In the first decade after its premiere, the Roman Catholic theology in Newman's poem caused difficulties in getting the work performed in Anglican cathedrals, and a revised text was used for performances at the Three Choirs Festival until 1910. Riferisce il viaggio dell'anima di un uomo pio dal suo letto di morte al suo giudizio davanti a Dio, risdolvendosi in Purgatorio. - The Dream of Gerontius, på svenska Gerontius dröm, är ett oratorium (opus 38) av Edward Elgar skrivet 1900 för mezzosopran, tenor, baryton, blandad kör och orkester. Elgar fick ett exemplar av dikten, som senare blev texten till The Dream of Gerontius, i bröllopspresent 1899. Dikten är skriven av kardinalen John Henry Newman och handlar om en mans själ efter döden. Gerontius kan ungefär översättas till gammal man. Inte förrän 1900 kom Elgar att påbörja komponerandet av oratoriet till 1900 års upplaga av Birminghamfestivalen, och detta i sista minuten eftersom han hade tänkt sig ett annat stycke. Detta först tänkta verk blev 1902–03 ett andra oratorium med titeln The Apostles. Uruppförandet av The Dream of Gerontius blev ingen framgång eftersom både körledaren och dirigenten hade missbedömt verkets svårighetsgrad och därför tagit till en alltför kort repetitionstid. Däremot förstod en tysk festivalgeneral verkets kvaliteter och lät framföra stycket med stor framgång på sin festival i Düsseldorf. Idag är The Dream of Gerontius ett av Elgars mest spelade verk för solister, blandad kör och orkester och ett av de mest framförda över huvud taget. Oratoriet består av två delar (35 + 60 minuter).
