- A Sea Symphony is an hour-long work for soprano, baritone, chorus and large orchestra written by Ralph Vaughan Williams between 1903 and 1909. The first and longest of his nine symphonies, it was first performed at the Leeds Festival in 1910 with the composer conducting, and its maturity belies the relatively young age — thirty — when he began sketching it. Moreover it is one of the first symphonies in which a chorus is used throughout as an integral part of the texture and it helped set the stage for a new era of symphonic and choral music in Britain during the first half of the 20th century. - A sea symphony La Symphonie no 1 (A sea symphony) est une symphonie chorale composée par Ralph Vaughan Williams entre 1903 et 1909. Elle est créée au festival de Leeds le 12 octobre 1910. Le compositeur a alors à peine trente ans lors de sa composition et cette relative jeunesse contraste avec le côté imposant de l'œuvre. Elle est composée pour soprano, baryton, chœurs et orchestre enrichi d'un orgue. Les textes sont de Walt Whitman, poète américain peu connu à cette époque : « Leaves of grass » pour les trois premiers mouvements et « Passage to India » pour le dernier. Cette œuvre est typique de la volonté de rupture avec la symphonie classique allemande, par son inspiration (chansons populaires anglaises) et par ses textes. Elle comprend quatre mouvements :

Rond 1900 verschenen allerlei composities over de zee, zoals La Mer van Claude Debussy en het eerdere werk met dezelfde titel van Paul Gilson en van Frank Bridge. Tegelijk groeide de belangstelling naar het werk van dichters zoals de Amerikaan Walt Whitman. Ralph Vaughan Williams combineerde beide zaken. In 1903 begon hij aan dit werk en was klaar in 1909, na veel wikken en wegen of composities gemaakt in die jaren, wel in het werk pasten. Ondertussen nam hij les bij Maurice Ravel.
