The common stopcock is the simplest form of rotary valve. Rotary valves have been applied in numerous applications, including:
* Changing the pitch of brass instruments.
* Controlling the steam and exhaust ports of steam engines, most notably in the Corliss steam engine.
* Periodically reversing the flow of air and fuel across the open hearth furnace.
* Loading sample on chromatography columns.
* Certain types of two-stroke and four-stroke engines.

- Een draaiventiel is een andere vorm van het pompventiel op muziekinstrumenten. Het draaiventiel wordt gebruikt op hoorns, sommige tuba's en eufoniums. Draaiventielen hebben een draaimechanisme dat de luchtdoorgang regelt, waarvan het ventiel de motor is. Het ventiel is verbonden aan een hefboom. Die hefboom is verbonden met een wiel, het zogenaamde draaiventiel. Hoe dieper de hefboom gaat, hoe meer het draaiventiel draait. Binnen in het draaiventiel is een luchtdoorgang die lucht krijgt vanuit de buis. Afhankelijk van de positie van het ventiel en het draaiventiel wordt de lucht doorgestuurd naar een andere buis van verschillende lengte, met als resultaat een andere toon.
