- Els mastins són un grup de races canines de grans dimensions distribuïdes al llarg d'Àsia i Europa. Aquests molosos s'han emprat tradicionalment com a gossos bovers, guardians de ramats i de la llar pel seu imponent aspecte i pel seu caràcter dòcil. És freqüent l'ús dels termes molós i dog com a sinònims de mastí. (ca)

Es muy valiente y leal, y el mejor para la guarda de los ganados. En su relación con el humano ha sido utilizado para matar lobos. El perro tipo mastín, está compuesto de decenas de agrupaciones étnicas distribuidas a lo largo de Asia y Europa, por lo que se entiende que en castellano se le defina «de pelo largo» ya que desde hace milenios los mastines conocidos en España son el mastín español o leonés y el mastín del pirineo que son «lanosos», aunque también existen los mastines de pelo corto como el pastor de Anatolia y el kangal turco. - Il termine mastino viene usato per designare alcune razze canine della famiglia dei Molossoidi caratterizzate da fisico robusto e massiccio, utilizzate sia per la guardia della proprietà sia per la difesa personale del padrone, di origine molto antica. Da un punto di vista sistematico, "mastino" non indica oggi una sotto-sezione dei Molossoidi, essendo i mastini più o meno equamente distribuiti tra la sotto-sezione "dogue" e la sotto-sezione "cani da montagna". La nomenclatura è piuttosto da intendersi quale sinonimo per "cane molosso di grossa taglia". Nei tempi passati, in italiano come in altre lingue (es. in inglese, Mastiff), "mastino" era propriamente inteso quale razza a sé originatasi dai molossi antichi. Le principali razze di mastino sono:
* il mastino tibetano, forma archetipica della razza molossoide, disceso direttamente dalla prima forma molossoide; tipo "cani da montagna";
