- Winners of the Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year Award, first awarded in 1952. No official award was given from 1911 to 1951, even though at least one rookie starter has been present in every running of the Indianapolis 500. The award is voted on by a panel of judges, which is composed of selected members of the media, historians, and a handful of other experts. The voting takes place the night of the race (or the morning after), and does not necessarily go to the highest-finishing rookie. Noteworthy accomplishments during qualifying, regardless of the respective race result, have frequently been a factor in voting. A rookie who competitively runs up front during the race, passes many cars, and/or leads laps (but ultimately drops out) can also garner consideration over another rookie who finished higher, but did so merely by surviving attrition. Other contributing attributes can include personal attitude, sportsmanship, professionalism, and interaction with driver coaches, fans, and media. Years in which two drivers are listed indicate co-winners, due to a tie in the final voting. The Indianapolis 500 rookie of the year award has been sponsored by the following companies:

* Marathon Petroleum Speedway convenience stores (2019–present) This award is separate from the annual IndyCar Rookie of the Year Award presented by IndyCar, as well as the Jim Trueman Award (rookie of the year) which was handed out by CART. The current award is $25,000 cash and a plaque. In the early years, when Stark & Wetzel sponsored the award, the prize package included $500 in cash, and a year's supply of meat. (en)

Vaak gaat de trofee naar de coureur die bij zijn debuut het hoogste eindigde aan de finish van alle deelnemende debutanten, maar dat is niet altijd zo. De prijs kan bijvoorbeeld ook gegeven worden aan een coureur die niet hoog eindigde aan de finish, maar die de poleposition veroverde zoals het geval was met Teo Fabi in 1983 en Tony Stewart, die op poleposition vertrok in 1996 nadat polesitter Scott Brayton verongelukt was tijdens vrije oefenritten. Af en toe wordt de prijs gedeeld door twee coureurs. Het is tevens geen criterum dat een debutant een jonge rijder hoeft te zijn, het enige criteria is dat het zijn of haar eerste deelname aan de Indy 500 is. Zo won regerend wereldkampioen Formule 1 Nigel Mansell de trofee in 1993. Daarentegen kreeg wereldkampioen Formule 1 uit 1962 Graham Hill de trofee niet, toen hij als debutant de race van 1966 won. Drie debutanten wonnen de trofee alsook de race, Juan Pablo Montoya in 2000 en Hélio Castroneves in 2001, die ervaring hadden uit de Champ Car series, toen deze raceklasse de concurrent was van de Indy Racing League, en Alexander Rossi in 2016. Lyn St. James was de eerste vrouwelijke coureur die de trofee won, later volgde Danica Patrick. Nederlander Arie Luyendyk won de trofee in 1985. (nl)
