- El 48è Festival Internacional de Cinema de Berlín va tenir lloc entre l'11 i el 22 de febrer de 1998. El festival va obrir amb la pel·lícula irlandesa The Boxer de Jim Sheridan. La pel·lícula de Francis Ford Coppola The Rainmaker fou seleccionada com a pel·lícula de clausura. L'Os d'Or fou atorgat a la pel·licula francobrasilera Central do Brasil dirigida per Walter Salles. Al festival es va mostrar la retrospectiva dedicada als Siodmak Bros., titulada Siodmak Bros. Berlin – London – Paris – Hollywood. (ca)
- Die 48. Internationalen Filmfestspiele Berlin fanden vom 11. Februar bis zum 22. Februar 1998 statt. Die Vorbereitung zur 48. Berlinale war geprägt von Absagen und ungeschickten Verhandlungen um Filme für den Wettbewerb. Zunächst sagte Clint Eastwood dem Festival ab. Für seinen Film Mitternacht im Garten von Gut und Böse zogen die Produzenten es vor, den Film ohne Festivalauftritt in die Kinos zu bringen. Das Leben ist schön von Roberto Benigni sollte seine Uraufführung im Wettbewerb haben. Durch zögerliche Verhandlungen entschied Benigni sich, den Film bei den Filmfestspielen von Cannes 1998 zu zeigen. Dort begann der Film dann seinen Weg zum Welterfolg. Politische Verwicklungen gab es um den Film Kundun von Martin Scorsese. Das Festival und Scorsese wollten den Film im Wettbewerb zeigen. Chinesische Proteste führten dann dazu, dass man sich gegen den Film entschied. (de)

Francis Ford Coppola's The Rainmaker was selected as the closing night film. The Golden Bear was awarded to Brazilian-French film Central Station directed by Walter Salles. The retrospective dedicated to Siodmak Bros., titled Siodmak Bros. Berlin – London – Paris – Hollywood was shown at the festival. (en)

L'Orso d'oro è stato assegnato al film brasiliano Central do Brasil di Walter Salles. L'Orso d'oro alla carriera è stato assegnato all'attrice francese Catherine Deneuve. Altri riconoscimenti onorari sono stati assegnati allo scrittore, regista e sceneggiatore Curt Siodmak e a , vice direttore dell'. Il festival è stato aperto dal film The Boxer di Jim Sheridan. La retrospettiva di questa edizione, intitolata "Siodmak Bros. - 48. Międzynarodowy Festiwal Filmowy w Berlinie odbył się w dniach 11–22 lutego 1998 roku. Imprezę otworzył pokaz irlandzkiego filmu Bokser w reżyserii Jima Sheridana. W konkursie głównym zaprezentowano 25 filmów pochodzących z 17 różnych krajów. Jury pod przewodnictwem brytyjskiego aktora Bena Kingsleya przyznało nagrodę główną festiwalu, Złotego Niedźwiedzia, brazylijskiemu filmowi Dworzec nadziei w reżyserii Waltera Sallesa. Drugą nagrodę w konkursie głównym, Srebrnego Niedźwiedzia – Nagrodę Specjalną Jury, przyznano amerykańskiej komedii Fakty i akty w reżyserii Barry’ego Levinsona. Honorowego Złotego Niedźwiedzia za całokształt twórczości odebrała francuska aktorka Catherine Deneuve. W ramach festiwalu odbyła się retrospektywa pt. Siodmak Bros. Berlin – London – Paris – Hollywood, poświęcona twórczości wywodzących się z Niemiec braci Roberta i Curta Siodmaków. (pl)
