- Le système de fortifications d'Amsterdam était un dispositif de protection de la ville médiévale contre les envahisseurs potentiels. Celui-ci connut plusieurs évolutions au cours des siècles, et plusieurs bâtiments de la ville, comme le Waag, la Montelbaanstoren ou encore la Schreierstoren témoignent encore de sa présence. Alors que la construction des dernières fortifications de la ville médiévale fut réalisées au XVIIe siècle, à la suite du troisième et du quatrième plan d'expansion de la ville, le système tomba progressivement en désuétude avec la mise en place de la ligne de défense d'Amsterdam au XIXe siècle. - The walls of Amsterdam (Dutch: Vestingwerken van Amsterdam) were built in the Middle Ages to protect the city against attack. The Medieval walls were replaced with a series of bastions in the 17th century. In the 19th century, the walls were torn down and replaced with the Defence Line of Amsterdam (Stelling van Amsterdam), a fortification line which encircled Amsterdam at a distance from the city. Remains of the Medieval and 17th-century defenses include the former city gates Waag and Munttoren, as well as the defensive tower Schreierstoren and the watchtower Montelbaanstoren. (en)

De vestingwerken dienden eveneens om de stadsgrens aan te geven, waarbinnen de stedelijke overheden accijnzen konden heffen.
