- Ram Sharan Sharma (* 26. November 1919 in Barauni nahe Begusarai, Bihar; † 20. August 2011 in Patna), meist als R. S. Sharma zitiert, war ein indischer Historiker. Er befasste sich mit antiker und mittelalterlicher indischer Geschichte. Sharma kam aus einfachen Verhältnissen, ging ab 1937 auf das Patna College und wurde an der School of Oriental and African Studies der Universität London bei A. L. Basham promoviert. Danach war er Lehrer an Colleges in Arrah (1943), Bhagalpur (1944–1946) und war ab 1946 am Patna College, Teil der Patna University, mit einer Universitätsprofessur ab 1958 tätig. 1958 bis 1973 stand er dort der Geschichtsfakultät vor. Danach war er Professor an der Universität Delhi, wo er ebenfalls der Geschichtsfakultät vorstand. 1985 wurde er emeritiert. Sein Schwerpunkt lag auf der Sozialgeschichte im frühen Indien; er untersuchte die Lage der unteren Schichten der Bevölkerung (Shudra) und die Entstehung feudaler Strukturen, die nach ihm mit einem Zerfall der Städte verbunden waren. 1959 bis 1964 war er Gastprofessor (Visiting Fellow) an der School of Oriental and African Studies (wo er Senior Fellow war) und 1965/66 an der University of Toronto. Er war 1972 Gründungspräsident des Indian Council of Historical Research. 1969 erhielt er die Jawaharlal Nehru Fellowship. 1975 war er Präsident des Indian History Congress. Il se fonde sur l'historiographie marxiste. Il enseigne à l'université Patna et à l'université de Delhi, de 1973 à 1985, et est professeur invité à l'Université de Toronto, de 1965 à 1966. Il est chercheur principal à l'École d'études orientales et africaines de l'université de Londres. Boursier national de la Commission des subventions universitaires, de 1958 à 1981, il préside le Congrès d'histoire indienne en 1975. C'est pendant son mandat en tant que doyen du département d'histoire de l'université de Delhi que l'expansion majeure du département a lieu dans les années 1970. Il contribue à créer plusieurs postes dans son Département. Président fondateur du Conseil Indien de Recherche Historique (ICHR), c'est un historien de renommée internationale. Il écrit 115 livres publiés en quinze langues. Son statut et ses postes lui permettent d'influencer des décisions relatives à la recherche historique en Inde. He taught at Patna University and Delhi University (1973–85) and was visiting faculty at University of Toronto (1965–1966). He also was a senior fellow at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. He was a University Grants Commission National Fellow (1958–81) and the president of Indian History Congress in 1975. It was during his tenure as the dean of Delhi University's History Department that major expansion of the department took place in the 1970s. The creation of most of the positions in the department were the results of his efforts. He was the founding Chairman of the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) and a historian of international repute. During his lifetime, he authored 115 books published in fifteen languages. He influenced major decisions relating to historical research in India in his roles as head of the departments of History at Patna and Delhi University, as Chairman of the Indian Council of Historical Research, as an important member of the National Commission of the History of Sciences in India and UNESCO Commission on the history of Central Asian Civilizations and of the University Grants Commission and, above all, as a practising historian. At the instance of Sachchidananda Sinha, when Professor Sharma was in Patna College, he worked as a special officer on deputation to the Political Department in 1948, where prepared a report on the Bihar-Bengal Boundary Dispute. His pioneering effort resolved the border dispute forever as recorded by Sachchinand Sinha in a letter to Rajendra Prasad. (en)
