The heavy equipment and weaponry of the Hellenic Army is of mostly foreign manufacture, from American, French, German, Russian and other suppliers. Exceptions are the Kentaurus and the Leonidas armored fighting vehicles which are built in Greece by the Hellenic Vehicle Industry. Οι πρόσφατες περικοπές στις δαπάνες για την άμυνα έχουν μεγάλη επίπτωση στα έξοδα λειτουργίας (μεταφορές, τεχνική υποστήριξη, προμήθειες, συντήρηση και λειτουργική εκπαίδευση). Καθώς μέχρι και το 80% του προϋπολογισμού του στρατού δαπανάται για τους μισθούς και τα λειτουργικά έξοδα του στρατού, ο Ελληνικός Στρατός αντιμετωπίζει την πρόκληση της αναδιοργάνωσης της δομής του. Αυτό μπορεί να οδηγήσει στο κλείσιμο μερικών από τα 500 στρατόπεδα που λειτουργούν στη χώρα, μεταμορφώνοντας τον Ελληνικό Στρατό σε ένα μικρότερο αλλά σε μεγάλο βαθμό επαγγελματικό στρατό. Υπό το σχέδιο για τη δομή της στρατιωτικής δομής το 2005-2020 θα γίνουν μεγάλες αλλαγές στο στρατό. Θα υπάρχουν δύο κατηγορίες μονάδων: οι ενεργές και οι κινητοποιημένες (εφεδρείες). Recent defence spending cuts have had a big impact in operating costs (maintenance, technical support, operational training, transport and supplies). As 80% of the budget is spent on salaries and administrative costs the Hellenic Army faces the challenge of reorganizing its structure. This may lead to closing down some of the 500 military bases scattered across the country and reducing the size of the Army, transforming the Hellenic Army into a smaller but largely professional force. Under the Force Structure 2005-2020 plan large-scale changes in the Army will be implemented. Only two categories of units will exist: active and mobilized (reserve).
