During his second season with the team, Piquet suffered a near fatal crash at the 1987 San Marino Grand Prix, which for the remainder of his career affected his vision whilst leading a race. Despite this, he won his third and final World Championship. Due to fears that he may have lost his number one status in the team, Piquet moved to Lotus in 1988. After two unsuccessful years with the team, he left for Benetton, where he picked up three more wins before retiring in 1991. He has been ranked among the greatest Formula One drivers in various motorsport polls. Piquet achieved his first victory in Formula One at the 1980 United States Grand Prix West on 30 March. He won thirteen races during his spell with Brabham, seven with Williams, and three with Benetton, equalling a total of 23 victories. He finished runner-up in only his second full season, and third on two occasions. During his first season with Williams, he amassed four victories, the most he achieved over the course of one season. His final race came at the 1991 Australian Grand Prix. In total, Piquet won 23 Grands Prix at 14 different circuits. He was most successful at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Hockenheimring and Autodromo Nazionale Monza, winning on three occasions at all three circuits. His most successful races were at the Italian Grand Prix, which he won four times. (en)
