- Hermann Prey ([praɪ] Berlin, 11 July 1929 – Krailling, 22 July 1998) was a German lyric baritone, who was equally at home in the Lied, operatic and concert repertoires. His American debut was in November 1952, with the Philadelphia Orchestra and Eugene Ormandy, and his American recital debut took place in 1956, at New York's Carnegie Hall. As a Lieder singer, he was a gifted interpreter of Schubert, including his song-cycles Die schöne Müllerin and Die Winterreise and the collection of songs Schwanengesang, as well as of Robert Schumann, Richard Strauss and Gustav Mahler. He also appeared frequently as a soloist in Bach's Passions and Brahms' A German Requiem. (en)

Avec Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, il a été un des deux grands barytons allemands de la seconde moitié du XXe siècle avec des styles qui s'opposaient. Il fit ses débuts en Amérique en novembre 1952, avec l'orchestre de Philadelphie sous la direction d'Eugene Ormandy, et ses débuts de récitals américains eurent lieu en 1956, à New York au Carnegie Hall. Il était spécialiste du rôle de Figaro, dans l’opéra Les Noces de Figaro de Mozart. En récital de lieder, il a eu pour partenaires : Karl Engel, Philippe Bianconi, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Gerald Moore et, pendant plus d'un quart de siècle, le pianiste américain (en). Dans le domaine de l'opéra, Hermann Prey fut un mozartien reconnu mais, plus inattendu pour un chanteur allemand, également un grand interprète du rôle de Figaro dans Le Barbier de Séville de Rossini, dirigé par Claudio Abbado et mis en scène par Jean-Pierre Ponnelle en 1970-1972, avec notamment Teresa Berganza en Rosine.
