- The Battle of Tarakan was the first stage in the Borneo campaign of 1945. It began with an amphibious landing by Allied forces on 1 May, code-named Operation Oboe One; the Allied ground forces were drawn mainly from the Australian 26th Brigade, but included a small element of Netherlands East Indies personnel. The main objective of the landing was the capture of the island's airfield. While the battle ended with success for the Allied forces over the Japanese defenders, this victory is generally regarded as having not justified its costs. The airfield was so heavily damaged that it ultimately could not be repaired in time to make it operational for other phases of the Allied campaign in Borneo. (en)

- La bataille de Tarakan désigne l'assaut amphibie australien, appuyé par des unités aériennes et navales américano-australiennes, sur l'île de Tarakan durant la reconquête de Bornéo pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Tarakan, lieu d'extraction pétrolier, fut envahie par l'Empire du Japon le 11 janvier 1942, le lendemain de la déclaration de guerre du Japon aux Pays-Bas et à ses colonies, notamment les Indes orientales néerlandaises. La prise de l'aérodrome de l'île ainsi que l'utilisation de ses puits de pétrole ont motivé l'assaut allié.Cet assaut constitue cependant une action militaire qui demeure contestée dans sa réelle utilité stratégique. Tarakan ne constituait pas en effet un objectif primordial tant par sa position géographique que par ses faibles infrastructures. D'autre part, les soldats japonais qui y étaient en garnison au début de l'assaut australien étaient déjà très isolés, coupés de tout soutien ou ravitaillement (d'autant plus que les eaux autour de l'île avaient été largement minées préalablement par les Alliés en 1944) et ne représentaient par conséquent qu'une menace militaire anecdotique. L'île fut déclarée sécurisée par le commandement allié le 21 juin 1945, cependant des escarmouches intermittentes durèrent jusqu'à la mi-août 1945 et la fin de la guerre. (fr)

Op 21 juni was het georganiseerde Japanse verzet gebroken, maar tot de overgave van Japan op 15 augustus 1945 bleven losse eenheden weerstand bieden. Achteraf is er veel gespeculeerd over de vraag of de geallieerde overwinning alle offers rechtvaardigde, aangezien Tarakan nauwelijks nog van strategische waarde was. (nl)

Rozpoczęła się od desantu sił alianckich 1 maja pod kryptonimem operacja Obeo One; siły lądowe aliantów składały się głównie z australijskiej 26 Brygady Piechoty, ale zawierały także niewielką część personelu holenderskiego. Głównym celem lądowania było zdobycie lotniska na wyspie. Chociaż bitwa zakończyła się sukcesem sił alianckich nad japońskimi obrońcami, uważa się, że zwycięstwo to osiągnięto zbyt wysokim kosztem. Lotnisko zostało tak mocno uszkodzone, że ostatecznie nie można było go naprawić na czas, aby mogło być gotowe do użytku w innych fazach kampanii alianckiej na Borneo. (pl)
