- The 2001 Giro d'Italia was the 84th edition of the Giro. It began with a 7 km (4 mi) prologue that went from Montesilvano to Pescara. The race came to a close on June 10 with a mass-start stage that ended in the Italian city of Milan. Twenty teams entered the race that was won by the Italian Gilberto Simoni of the Lampre–Daikin team. Second and third were the Spanish riders Abraham Olano and Unai Osa. In the race's other classifications, Selle Italia–Pacific rider Fredy González won the mountains classification, Massimo Strazzer of the Mobilvetta Design–Formaggi Trentini team won the intergiro classification and the points classification. Alessio finished as the winners of the Trofeo Fast Team classification, ranking each of the twenty teams contesting the race by lowest cumulative time. The other team classification, the Trofeo Super Team classification, where the teams' riders are awarded points for placing within the top twenty in each stage and the points are then totaled for each team was also won by Fassa Bortolo. Participaron 190 ciclistas repartidos en 20 equipos de 9 corredores cada uno resultando vencedor absoluto el italiano Gilberto Simoni que cubrió la prueba en 89h 02’ 58’’ a una velocidad media de 40,170 km/h. La prueba estuvo enmarcada dentro de una operación antidopage de la policía llamada « blitz », en la que los cuerpos de seguridad registraron los hoteles y vehículos de los equipos en busca de sustancias prohibidas. En protesta, los corredores se negaron a correr la 18.ª etapa de este Giro. (es)
