- La British Science Association (fins al 2009 British Association for the Advancement of Science) és una societat per al foment de la ciència, la divulgació de la recerca avançada i l'ensenyament. Fundada en 1831 per William Vernon Harcourt, un dels seus objectius principals és involucrar la societat civil en el progrés científic, tant col·laborant i coneixent les investigacions que es duen a terme al Regne Unit com opinant sobre les seves implicacions al camp de l'ètica. Una de les polèmiques més famoses va girar al voltant del debat sobre la teoria de l'evolució. L'associació organitza setmanes i festivals de la ciència, conferències i jornades i publica una revista periòdica, la Advancement of Science.Compta amb uns 5000 socis i està oberta a qualsevol persona interessada en la ciència, a diferència d'altres societats del mateix camp com la Royal Society. - Die British Association oder – in der Langform – die British Association for the Advancement of Science ist eine Vereinigung mit dem Ziel, Wissenschaft populär zu machen und den Austausch zwischen Wissenschaftlern zu fördern. Seit 2009 arbeitet die Gesellschaft unter dem Namen British Science Association. Sitz der Gesellschaft ist London. Sie wurde 1831 nach dem Vorbild der Gesellschaft deutscher Naturforscher durch (1789–1871) auf Vorschlag von David Brewster gegründet, nachdem dieser sich enttäuscht von der Royal Society abwandte wegen ihrer aus seiner Sicht elitären und konservativen Haltung. Die erste Zusammenkunft der Gesellschaft fand am 27. September 1831 in York statt. In ihrem Auftrag wurde 1842 der erste Nomenklatur-Code, der sogenannte erstellt. Er sollte gleichermaßen für Tiere wie Pflanzen gültig sein, löste aber über der Frage nach dem Autor-Zitat zugleich die Spaltung zwischen Botanik und Zoologie in nomenklatorischen Fragen aus. Während der letzten Jahrzehnte war es das Hauptziel dieser Gesellschaft, das Verständnis von Wissenschaft in der breiten Öffentlichkeit zu fördern. Das jährliche Treffen, welches heute „Festival of Science“ (Fest der Wissenschaft) genannt wird, ist die größte öffentliche Wissenschaftsveranstaltung in Großbritannien, die viel öffentliche Aufmerksamkeit auf sich zieht. Die Jugendorganisation der Gesellschaft (British Association of Young Scientists) hat es sich zum Ziel gesetzt, Schüler über die Schullehrpläne hinaus mit Wissenschaft zu konfrontieren und sie zu ermutigen, sich in diesem Gebiet weiterzubilden. The BSA's mission is to get more people engaged in the field of science by coordinating, delivering, and overseeing different projects that are suited to achieve these goals. The BSA "envisions a society in which a diverse group of people can learn and apply the sciences in which they learn." and is managed by a professional staff located at their Head Office in the Wellcome Wolfson Building. The BSA offers a wide variety of activities and events that both recognize and encourage people to be involved in science.
