On parle également de figure rhétorique ou de figure du discours. Si certains auteurs établissent des distinctions dans la portée des deux expressions, l’usage courant en fait des synonymes. Chaque langue a ainsi ses propres figures de style ; leur traduction pose souvent des problèmes de fidélité par rapport à l'image recherchée. A figure of speech or rhetorical figure is a word or phrase that intentionally deviates from ordinary language use in order to produce a rhetorical effect. Figures of speech are traditionally classified into schemes, which vary the ordinary sequence of words, and tropes, where words carry a meaning other than what they ordinarily signify. Majas atau gaya bahasa yaitu bahasa indonesia bahasa, pemakaian ragam tertentu untuk memperoleh efek-efek tertentu yang membuat sebuah karya sastra semakin hidup, keseluruhan ciri bahasa sekelompok penulis sastra dan cara khas dalam menyampaikan pikiran dan perasaan, baik secara lisan maupun tertulis.Majas digunakan dalam penulisan karya sastra, termasuk di dalamnya puisi dan prosa.
