- William Fitzherbert (auch William of York oder deutsch Wilhelm von York) (* nach 1090; † 8. Juni 1154 in York) war ein anglonormannischer Geistlicher. Er war Erzbischof von York und wird von der katholischen Kirche als Heiliger verehrt. Sein Namenstag ist der 8. Juni. William hatte das Unglück, dass zum Zeitpunkt seiner Wahl die königliche Autorität in England durch den Thronfolgekrieg geschwächt war. Dazu hatte er einflussreiche Gegner im Kathedralkapitel von York, die von den Zisterziensern kräftige Unterstützung erhielten. Der Zisterzienserorden gewann damals rasch an Bedeutung und Ansehen und erreichte, dass ein dem Orden angehöriger Papst sogar William als geweihten Erzbischof von York absetzte. C'est un saint de l'Église catholique romaine fêté localement le 8 juin. Il doit faire face à l'opposition des cisterciens qui, après l'élection du pape cistercien Eugène III, entreprennent de le déposer en faveur d'Henri Murdac. Entre 1147 et 1151, FitzHerbert travaille pour assurer sa restauration en tant qu'archevêque, qu'il obtient après les morts de Murdac et d'Eugène III. - William of York (late 11th century – 8 June 1154) was an English priest and twice Archbishop of York, before and after a rival, Henry Murdac. He was thought to be related to King Stephen of England, who helped to secure his election to the province after several candidates had failed to gain papal confirmation. William faced opposition from the Cistercians, who after the election of the Cistercian Pope Eugene III, had William deposed in favour of a Cistercian, Murdac. From 1147 until 1153, William worked to be restored to York, which he achieved after the deaths of Murdac and Eugene III. He did not hold the province long, dying shortly after his return, allegedly from poison in the chalice he used to celebrate Mass. Miracles were reported at his tomb from 1177. He was canonised in 1226. (en)
