Publicada en 1969, va ser traduïda al català per Proa l'any 1997 i per Raig Verd el 2019. L'obra descriu una societat andrògina interplanetària i els seus dubtes sobre la unió o no a una aliança global. Dílo volně náleží do cyklu Hain a bylo oceněno cenami Nebula (1970), Hugo (1970), Tiptree (1996 - Retro Tiptree) a Gaylactic Spectrum (2003). Děj se odehrává na planetě Gethen (planetárním společenstvím Ekumen nazývané Zimní planeta) přibližně kolem letopočtu 4 870 n.l. Příběh je v ich-formě, vypráví jej Genly Ai, první mobil (vyslanec) Ekumenu, menší část i lord Estraven, bývalý rádce krále Argavena XV. z Karhide. Hlavní dějová část je prokládána vedlejšími příběhy, např. legendami z historie Gethenu nebo zprávami výzkumných expedic Ekumenu na Zimní planetě. Název je z jedné gethenské básně, která začíná slovy „Světlo je levá ruka tmy“. Autorka v knize použila neologismus „ansibl“ (anglicky „ansible“) pro komunikační zařízení umožňující přenos nadsvětelnou rychlostí. Poprvé se objevil v jejím dřívějším románu Rocannonův svět (1966). Pojem se ve sci-fi literatuře uchytil a rozšířil. Česky knihu vydalo nakladatelství Argo v roce 1995 a 2009. (cs)
- Die linke Hand der Dunkelheit (Originaltitel The Left Hand of Darkness, in Deutschland ursprünglich unter dem Titel Winterplanet veröffentlicht) ist ein 1969 erschienener, zum Hainish-Zyklus gehörender Science-Fiction-Roman der Autorin Ursula K. Le Guin in der Übersetzung von Gisela Stege. Er gilt als einer der ersten Romane der feministischen Science Fiction und ist sicherlich die bekannteste Behandlung der Androgynität innerhalb des Genres. 1970 erhielt der Roman sowohl den Hugo als auch den Nebula Award als bester Roman des Jahres. 1987 wurde er von den Lesern des Magazins Locus zum zweitbesten Science Fiction & Fantasy Roman (nach Dune von Frank Herbert) gewählt. Im Vorwort nennt Le Guin den Roman (und einen Großteil der Science Fiction) ein "Gedankenexperiment", das in diesem Fall eine mögliche Gesellschaft ohne die sexuelle Unterteilung in Männer und Frauen erforscht. The novel is set in the fictional Hainish universe as part of the Hainish Cycle, a series of novels and short stories by Le Guin, which she introduced in the 1964 short story "The Dowry of Angyar". It was fourth in sequence of writing among the Hainish novels, preceded by City of Illusions, and followed by The Word for World Is Forest. The novel follows the story of Genly Ai, a human native of Terra, who is sent to the planet of Gethen as an envoy of the Ekumen, a loose confederation of planets. Ai's mission is to persuade the nations of Gethen to join the Ekumen, but he is stymied by a lack of understanding of their culture. Individuals on Gethen are ambisexual, with no fixed sex; this has a strong influence on the culture of the planet, and creates a barrier of understanding for Ai. The Left Hand of Darkness was among the first books in the genre now known as feminist science fiction and is the most famous examination of androgyny in science fiction.
