The first print editions of the book were published in September 2020 in the United Kingdom by Michael Joseph, and in August 2021 in the United States by Mulholland Books. Afterland was translated into French by Laurent Philibert-Caillat and published in France by Albin Michel in January 2022. The book was nominated for the 2021 Nommo Award for Best Speculative Fiction Novel by an African. (en)
