- An ansible is a category of fictional devices or technology capable of near-instantaneous or faster-than-light communication. It can send and receive messages to and from a corresponding device over any distance or obstacle whatsoever with no delay, even between star systems. As a name for such a device, the word "ansible" first appeared in a 1966 novel by Ursula K. Le Guin. Since that time, the term has been broadly used in the works of numerous science fiction authors, across a variety of settings and continuities. A related term is ultrawave. (en)

Il termine ansible è stato coniato originariamente dalla scrittrice Ursula K. Le Guin nel romanzo Il mondo di Rocannon del 1966. Secondo la Le Guin il termine deriverebbe da una storpiatura della parola inglese answerable, indicante un dispositivo che dà la possibilità di ricevere una risposta (answer) anche su distanze interstellari. Il superamento della velocità della luce, assunto di base del dispositivo, avverrebbe grazie al fatto che la comunicazione si svolge sotto forma di deformazione delle onde gravitazionali, propagandosi quindi in modo istantaneo attraverso la trama spazio-temporale dell'universo e indipendentemente dal concetto stesso di velocità. Il termine è stato poi preso in prestito, sempre per indicare un dispositivo atto a permettere una comunicazione istantanea, da altri autori quali Orson Scott Card, Vernor Vinge, Elizabeth Moon, , Dan Simmons e Neil Gaiman. Ансибл представляет собой аппарат мгновенной связи между объектами, находящимися на астрономических расстояниях друг от друга. Жизнь гениального учёного, создавшего теорию, позволившую построить ансибл, описана в романе «Обделённые». Использование ансибла является важным сюжетным моментом в романах «Планета Роканнона» и «Слово для леса и мира одно». Все корабли IV столетия по календарю Союза всех планет, в том числе беспилотные сверхсветовые корабли-бомбардировщики, оборудованы ансиблами.
